Well AT&T Edge has a consistent download speed of 48 kb/s and it was rumored that AT&T bumped its edge network to 80 kb/s for the iPhone release so here are some estimates on how long it should take some popular sites to load. I rounded numbers to the closest whole number.

Mac Rumors
48 kb/s 6 secs
80 kb/s 4 secs

iLounge Home Page
48 kb/s- 16 secs
80 kb/s- 10 secs

Digg.com
48 kb/s- 8 secs
80 kb/s- 5 secs

Engadget.com
48 kb/s- 25 secs
80 kb/s- 15 secs

Myspace.com (myspace pages can range from small to huge bloated sites so ill the most bloated page I could find
48 kb/s- 35 secs
80 kb/s- 21 secs

Facebook.com (user page)
48 kb/s- 10 secs
80 kb/s- 6 secs

Yahoo.com
48 kb/s- 8 secs
80 kb/s- 5 secs

eBay.com
48 kb/s- 14 secs
80 kb/s- 8 secs

Google.com (it loaded so fast that I couldn't round to the nearest whole #)
48 kb/s- 0.4 secs
80 kb/s- 0.25 secs

Sure its not very fast but for a mobile web I think it is very reasonable, but it sure wouldn't hurt to have 3g. And these are not actual download speeds from a iPhone but estimates of what they should be according to edge speeds and the rumored edge speed upgrade.

Of corse this is just what I guessing and we wont really know till friday.

UPDATE: I have my iPhone and im trying edge, I live about 20 miles from LA so im probelly not in a area where speeds for edge are the highest.

well here are some speeds, im to excited and want to play with it so im only doing a few.

mac rumors
12 secs

engadget
29 secs

Im very very happy with this because its so fast, those times are for the whole page to load, and it only takes 6 to 7 secs for the page to start showing up so you can start reading, it seems that edge is faster but the latency is whats slowing it down. Still very fast.

This thing even beat my hype I had for it. I love it!

well remember the flash ads (like myspace) won't be there.

that is ture but again these are just rough calculations. I will report back here friday night or saturday to let you know, or one of you guys can

this is using edge right?

i mean i plan on using wifi for most of my surfing, if possible

I've found there is a lot of latency with EDGE internet...that could add some overhead to those numbers, though they are generally reasonable. I don't think the general expectation will be for blazing fast internet...and the tech will improve with new revisions.

yea this is according to what AT&T's said the speed of edge is supposed to be

I agree. EDGE speeds are fine for me. It's the latency that's really annoying.

I'm hoping the iPhone can remedy this somewhat somehow.

can you run the numbers and tell me (theoretically of course) how long it will take teh iFone™ to change my iLife?

Well most browsers, I assume Safari included, will start displaying the page before it is completely loaded (i.e. before all the pictures are downloaded).

Engadget, for example, is very image heavy. I'd imagine the page would show up on the screen well before 15-25 seconds...

Huh, 80 kbps? EDGE is capable of 200 or more. AT&T's limiting it to 80? Hahahahahaha.

umm yeah do you mean KB or kb? theres a huge diffrence.

edge should do 30 KB/s stable or 240kb/s stable (same speed diffrent units)
