After watching the intro video again, I have concluded that it doesn't make sense for there to be no horizontal keyboard. When the guy is viewing the web browser in wide aspect, there is still the menu/address bar at the top, so what would happen if he touched it while in that mode? Wouldn't a wide keyboard pop up, or would the screen do its rotaty thingie with you not rotating it and go back to tall mode, effectively being sideways as you look at it? That doesn't sound apple-like to me.

There was mention of a horizontal keyboard to Steve after the initial announcement and he only commented that they hadn't decided if they would do it. He had the same answer when asked if you could purchase through itunes store via the iphone.

Oh drat.

The way you put it (not being Apple-like), made me suddenly realize why they'd never do a landscape mode... because it would prove to users that the portrait mode sucks in comparison.

no it wouldn't. Landscape mode would suck as a keyboard, because if it used the whole width of the landscape screen, it would take up like 75% of the height, and you couldn't see anything except the keyboard. It would be real awkward. At least in portrait you have some semblance of a screen above it.

True, if you're really lucky, there's only one input field and the prompt for it stays out of the popup and is still readable.

I meant more that once someone tried the landscape mode, and found that it was actually semi-usable... then they'd realize that the original claim of super usability in portrait mode was just hype ;)

Again, remember where I'm coming from. I use a landscape predictive-text keyboard on a handheld touch screen that's BIGGER than the iPhone, and I think it's a pain.

My rule of thumb is, if a keyboard touts prediction and autocorrection, then there's a really good reason they needed those things !! It's like a warning.

Regards.
