Cool story...
When i plug in my external hard drive, it mounts and i can see it in the Finder window under Collections. Then when i dont need to use it, i Eject it so it doesnt keep spinning.

But how do I get it to mount again w/o physically unplugging and plugging it back in the USB slot?

(It's a real chore reaching around in the iMac)

I use Semulov. It's free and sits in your menubar. Allows you to unmount/mount any drive.

I've been using it since Snow Leopard and it works just fine in 10.8.3

Nice, just tried it and does just that.

Any way to only show external drives only? It's showing Boot OS X and Recovery HD?

EDIT:
There's a beta 1.7 version that apparently hides those drives.

EDIT 2: After trying Semulov for a longer period, it sadly does not work.
It does a good job showing and hiding the external drive in the Finder but does not actually "unmount" it.
The disk keeps spinning until I go in Disk Utility and eject it.

Will be uninstalling it now...

What kind of port does the volume use? Thunderbolt? Firewire?

Admittedly I've only used it with internal DMG's, CD's, internal partitions and external USB drives... all of which mount/unmount fine with this utility. (And now with 1.7 I don't have to see my Boot Camp partition anymore).

My external drive's plugged into the USB.
What brand is it? Western Digital. Seagate? A hybrid?

Is it possible you installed some of those useless utility apps/drivers that come with these drives? You have something preventing it from being recognized as dismounted - a function that is relatively straightforward with OSX.

It's a seagate 2tb drive.
Just formatted it for mac and ran it. Never installed any of their stuff.

I may try it with a different HD brand and see if it changes anything.
