Think about it, apple store online isnt going to do that for every single sale.

Its kind of stupid, YES its gona be another wii/ps3 fest on ebay but the reason the activation says "with two year agreement" is because without it its a shiny useless brick, im sure if you require a deposit it will be done at itunes...

According to the video it appears it will be optional. You can get a pre-approved code from At&t so that when you activate you iPhone, there is not "credit check". Otherwise, when you activate it in iTunes, it will run you credit immediately upon confirming the contract.

SWEET!:D

This is how it appears. I don't think the video could be more clear on it, but thanks to Mac Rumors there is more false information around than anything else

If you don't get pre-approved for credit, there _will_ be a credit check. Thats the reason you need to add your SSN. That didn't walk through those screens, but believe you me they will be there. Unless you are going pre-paid, you gotta get a credit check. Don't believe me, wait till release and see.

will there be a credit check for existing customers as well? the reason i ask is that i am on my dads account and he went to greece and wont be back for a while...but he did give me the last four digits of his social so i could get the iphone....and i could get the other part too...but if they do an in store credit check they ask for i.d. i think...

might just by it online...but if the lines werent too bad i wanted to get it friday....

I don't believe so - at least not in my experiences. If you already have an account with them, and you verify it, they'll let you do whatever you want. Hell, they sold an entire plan to my kid brother who was 13 at the time when he went in to replace his telephone (it broke). They don't hire the brightest people in the world - that's for sure.

:)

The interesting thing is whether there will be a crack for the whole activation thing. If so, I can see a lot of people picking up the phone without the contract and just sticking their existing SIM card in there.

Yes, but i also wonder if you can just walk in and pick one up in the store without a credit check because no activation takes place at the store like they said, it all takes place in itunes. I cant see the point of having a program on their registers only doing credit checks if they were not assigning plans and our rate options to the newly purchased phones.

Just to clarify, I was just saying that the only way to get a cell phone from any provider without a credit check is to go pre-paid. We know the iPhone presently doesn't have a pre-paid option.

I can. It would suck to buy the iPhone, take it home, and find out you need to pay an additional $750. I could see them asking you at the register if you want to do a credit check, and they might explain why it would be good to do it then, and then give you the option of deciding (like certain people know they will pass with no problems, so don't have to do it there).

Well i have no credit, so i am hoping that this is the way it is done, and i can get my dad to cosign for it through a phone call when i set it up. Kinda frustrating for people like me who are building up their credit at such a young age, but at the same having a little extra money sitting around to treat myself to one of these. :)

the only people who will need to pay the max $750 deposit im sure are aware of either their lack of credit or their bad credit rating. To counter this scenario, the video should have stressed that customers with question or no credit should get a pre approved credit check to determine eligibility and the deposit size.

Yeah I think you'll be fine. I've gotten new phones/extended my plans (under my mother's name) through ATT/cingular before without my mother present. You just need the last four of the social.

So this opens the door to resellers on ebay. Motivated seller gets the iPhone, sells it on ebay, person who buys it gets the phone and completes the registration process. I am happy with the phone plans and activation process as buyer who wants the phone but was also a little relieved in hoping it would just be people who where buying the phones for themselves to use come lines on friday. There is nothing from stopping that now. Again dont get me wrong im happy how it all played out but it should interesting to see what pops up on ebay and craigslist.

Buying from a third party is going to be the same as buying from apple or att in terms of getting the phone itself. There is no liability until you are at home on itunes with the phone.
