Lyrics need to be added by someone.
I can see all my lyrics embedded into songs using iTunes. Apple Music must do the same to let you see lyrics.

Lyrics were present in other betas. It's not as if someone removed them from every song in Apple Music. I think you are misunderstanding the point. They just don't work in this beta - only the ones added by the user to iTunes. I'm sure they will be working come GM.

I've never had any lyrics working. The first couple of PB I always got "Failed to load lyrics" and now I just get a spinning "Loading lyrics" wheel and they never appear.

Hmm, yeah. I don't use Apple Music so it is possible for me to misunderstand those things.
Time will tell.

Lyrics must be approved and supplied by the copyright holder. Apple can't add any lyrics proactively. Not sure what the OP was seeing but since the location is Mexico it could have been a fluke or some type of limited approved test. Lyrics will probably be a slow roll out since music labels are usually slow and must deal with individual copyright contract (some artist don't allow their lyrics to be published).

Also added lyrics will be backend and will be unrelated to Music app updates. Already I'm starting to see a few more tracks with lyrics included. I predict that in a year or 2 most tracks will have published lyrics included.

I've never understood this copyright / non-publication of lyrics thing. I can understand it with the tabs or music score but surely they like people singing along to their songs? Seems like it could only benefit artists to have their lyrics available in as many places as possible really.

The lyrics are copyrighted just like a book or like the song's music is copyright protected. So all lyrics are the intellectual property of the copyright holder. Any lyrics you see are ether licensed (rights paid or permission grated) or are illegal (bootleg).

As far as what seems best or is best to the artist is immaterial to what seems logical. It is all about copyright law and what is in the contracts.

Apple WILL NOT bootleg lyrics.

I assume the only way to enable it is to make your Apple Music account in the US (switch iTunes region). As it seems switching regions on the iOS device doesn't seem to work.
But to do so, either you register a US account and sub Apple Music, or manage to get a USA credit card to switch.

Add it yourself. This is all what I do.
For AM it might be different though, as I never use AM before.

Far too much work involved to add lyrics to songs. Besides, all the songs in my personal library I usually know the lyrics to. It's the new lyrics in Apple Music I want. Seems the rest of the world might lose out again to what could turn out to be a US only thing. Would be helpful if just once they'd remember that the WWDC is seen worldwide and that they'd mention if a feature is limited to the US. At least it would stop users in other countries getting annoyed when it's missing / not working.

The difference with lyrics compared to any other type of copyrighted material is that no one EVER buys just lyrics. There is no profit to be made from them, and by definition no material loss to the rights holders by any distribution of those lyrics. I can sit down and teach the lyrics to any song to a room of 100 people and there'd be no problem but put the lyrics in an app and all hell breaks loose. Copyright has its place but I can't help thinking that it's been over done for far too long. The world really needs to look long and hard at moving into the 21st century as far as digital rights are concerned

Many performers don't write their lyrics (or music) and but buy/license them. So yes lyrics are the intellectual property of the copyright holder and are often sold. Also copyright is about laws that cover the material and is not correlated to profits, logic or motives.

Placing lyrics, someone's property, into an app enhances the monetary value of the app.

If the lyrics are already provided in the CD liner notes, or in PDF distributed with the purchased iTunes file (which is the case for many) then there really is no excuse for not making them available in the iOS music player.

There may seem to be no practical "excuse" (and I agree) but since they are copyright protected EVERY single use must be licensed. Copyright as it name implies is to protect from copying. So it is very simple. If you take a licensed CD's liner notes and copy them to use in :apple:Music/iTines then you have violated copyright law.

Now I buy (pun) the passionate arguments that it seems simple to implement and it seems like a win/win idea and why wouldn't the artist love the publicity and why don't Apple 'make' the copyright holders do it and....... However the law has no provisions for passion.

I totally understand your point, but the the consumer loses out in the end because there's little practical value in providing a PDF which is just going to sit on user's computer unopened, when the music is consumed on the device and there the lyrics aren't provided.
