So, I had an unexpected visitor(s) yesterday. Someone broke into my home and next to a few minor things they also stole my main PC, an one year old Ryzen based PC with all my images/videos/projects.

This things weighs a hefty 15 kilos or 30 pounds for my US friends. They didn't bother to take my late 2014 Mac Mini which was next to it.

Luckily my pictures, videos, projects and other important information is stored on Backblaze, an offsite external disk and my NAS (which they didn't find).

I'm really frustrated as I know the police won't to anything over here. I'm now waiting on my insurance to know what I will recover from the stolen goods.

Well, back to my Mini for photo editing (I'll be skipping the video work). It's a Late mid 2014 Mini with 8Gb ram and a classic spinner. I already ordered iFixit tools and a SSD to speed things up, as it will be my work horse for the upcoming weeks.

I don't know yet what to get next. First I need to cool down a bit and get my Lightroom library working on my Mini.

Frustrated... sigh :(

Sorry to hear that. Great job on the backups! These stories make you realize how important those are. Also how useful those IP cameras can be, like Nest Protect.

Stuff can be replaced, hoping the insurance will cover.

Sorry to hear that. Where are you that police won’t do anything about a break in?

Belgium. The police wasn't able to find anything, no fingerprints, nothing. They broke the backdoor lock, got in and got out in a few minutes.

Ext SSD helps a LOT on the 2014 Minis.
I looked at procedure for internal SSD. and it looks rather fraught for a 4 year old machine with those tiny, thin fragile cables. Still get 390/420 MB/Sec write and read. No Trim.

It was probably only one thief and the PC was already too heavy for him. Some people don’t know what a Mac mini is, some people think an iMac is just a display. I know how frustrating it can be, but crimes like that happen only once during a persons lifetime on average. So maybe this was your unlucky day and from now on everything will be fine for you.

:D Cheer Up!

Good on you for backing up your important data.

I don't know how it works in Belgium, but where I live the police don't really work individual break-ins because property crime simply happens too often. However, occasionally they make a big bust on a theft ring. At that point a lot of stolen property is found, and if the serial numbers/descriptions match stolen goods in the police reports, the police do like to get the property back to the owners.

So if it is similar in Belgium, include good descriptions and serial numbers in the police report for the slight chance you will get it back.

The Mini is not worth stealing (haha)! They probably thought it was an Apple TV. Sorry for your loss.
I don't keep anything on my computer that I would miss too much fortunately.
Photos/music are backed up online and I could live without them if I had to.

That sucks, I hope my mini looks useless next to my older Bose sound dock.

Oh,
Bon chance avec votre equip du football!

A burglar stole my new Dell tower and tube monitor a few years ago, he used a pickup truck to haul it away.

Now I have a Mac Mini and wonder if a burglar would grab it. Police said they like to steal things that can be quickly sold or traded for drugs.

I passed all the serial numbers of things I managed to find the packaging from. It's like ActionableMango wrote earlier, if the police is able to do a big bust, they will contact you if any of the goods are yours.
