Things haven't been looking good for them since the Nextel merger. They keep coming out with these gimmicky ideas such as cheaper plans and unlimited calling. They just don't get it, nobody wants to use your service when your customer service is that awful. Someone will bail them out, they have too many customers to just let die on their own.

How exactly is cheaper plans and unlimited calling a gimmick?

I think he meant that no matter how you spin it, and what you offer ["With every new phone, we'll give the kids a whistle!!!"], if customer service stinks, and their phones are no better than the competition, then why would you leave your current service. At least that's how I took it?

I'm glad to hear this. After being a Spring customer for 7 years, I just moved to AT&T to get the iPhone this past July. As was already mentioned, they're customer service blows and pissed me off to the point that I switched.

For example:
I was on their lowest texting plan, 100 /month for $5, since I didn't text all that much. For like 2 months in a row my phone bill was about $80 higher than normal. I didn't catch this right away because I setup my account to auto-pay from my checking and I opted to not receive a bill--only view the bill online every so often to make sure everything was legit. Anyways, I finally noticed my bill was way too high and I noticed it was because I had gone over (quite a bit over) my 100 texts for those 2 months--girls and their texting, I swear. So I call Sprint to have my texting plan increased in order to not be overcharged. They proceed to tell me that their now minimum text plan is 300 /month for $5. But I was still on 100 /month for $5. THEN WHY THE F*CK DID THEY CHARGE ME ALL THAT FOR THOSE TEXTS ?!?!? I was so pissed at them, I swore to that person I was leaving them when my contract was up--was about 6 months from then. I feel I got totally screwed by them

Their customer service is trash. Just yesterday a buddy had a problem with his Blackberry. They replaced it. Same problem. He asked for an upgrade. They said fine. He said gimme the Tour....No. Well, gimme the Pre...No. Well, give me the HTC....No. He said so in other words, you want to give me all your junk. He stated my contract has been up for years and I stick with you all. 13 years with you. You'd rather let me cancel and move to a diff comp than give me a newer device, at new customer price and not sign a new contract. They told him Yes. He canceled and went to ATT. Bought an iPhone.
WtF! Why would you do that? Company is dumb!

The problem with Sprint is their iDen side of the house, or the legacy Nextel side. Their CDMA side or the legacy Sprint side is doing fantastic and is adding both post-paid and pre-paid customers every quarter. The bleeding of customers is coming from the Nextel side because PTT was a gimick and has been replaced by SMS. Without PTT the iDen network is terrible.

Speaking of customer service for Sprint, their retail channel beat AT&T's retail customer service according to JD Powers results that came out a week or two ago. They're expected to beat AT&T's customer service all around next quarter. Too little too late? Who cares. I have Sprint and I love their service and their price, it really can't be beat for smartphone users. My service is going to stay on regardless of what happens, and I don't care what company logo is on my bill as long as I'm getting the service I want at the price I want. Only fanboys care about logos.

That isn't even close to what he said. He said 'gimmicky ideas such as cheaper plans and unlimited calling.'

I disagree. In it's time, PTT and Nextel was incredible. No one could duplicate it. Not to mention....EVERYONE wanted it and had it. Problem I found was their phones were big and terrible. Every phone they made had the same exact ringers...WTH! I do agree that SMS has replaced PTT, but PTT was a great idea and Sprint didnt see SMS coming. Now they are stuck with a 386 dx2.

Sprint will be bought up by another carrier. (I suspect it will be T-Mobile)
I predict they will no longer be around after next year.

Those are marketing and strategic plans - not gimmicks.

Sprint is doing whatever it can to maintain or lure people away from AT&T and Verizon. That doesnt make it a gimmick.

This is Why I left Sprint years ago and never looked back. Calling customer service and getting reps that are obviously overseas and having a horrible time understanding them. this is not what I want when I have a phone issue. I have been with Sprint, Verizon and now AT&T. Sprint was by far the worst for those that like them I am happy you are happy with them. I am happy I left them. ;)

A simple google search would have told you that if you get a Sprint CSR who obviously is in another country (static, accent, crap)...just hang up and call again. Eventually, someone in the US will pick up.

Whenever you have a problem, whatever it is, call the Retention Line. :D

I was so excited I got out of my contract there with no EFT. They lost soooooo much money on that admin fees increase. The site I was on literally 500 people cancelled with no ETF.

I had Nextel in 03 and for the guy that said sms replaced ptt.... no comparison. Ptt was great and no way could it be replaced by sms. Of course I left Sprint for the same reasons many others did, their CS is total crap. Nextel's cs was top of the line, best I have seen from a cell company..... to bad sprint had to screw all that up.

An article over a year old (especially in the technology field) is no longer valid. So much can/could/has happened since then for both companies.
It is still very valid.
Those types of deals don't happen over night.
They take years to develop and Sprint is dying a slow death.
