Bought an iPad 11'' A1980 on eBay....

Have a 12.9'' 3rd gen and wanted the 11'' that came out at the same time. This was listed as 11'' 3rd gen, but realizing 11'' 3rd gen are the brand new ones with the M1 and technically this is really the 11'' 1st gen....

Paid $460 on eBay, 64GB, everything looks to work, has apple care for another 11 months.

Technically it's what I wanted, but did I pay the 3rd gen price for a 1st gen or is this price OK

No way you could get the 11” M1 for $460. You paid the right price for what you got which was the iPad Pro 11” 2018.

The A1980 model is the 11" 1st gen (2018), which is the same year model as your 12.9" 3rd gen. I'm sure the seller mistakenly said 3rd gen, but it looks like they properly said the Model (A1980) and if it has 1 camera, then it is easy to tell it is a first gen 11". The 2020/2021 all have the camera square.
The 2020 and 2021 11" are also not available in 64GB models, as the smallest storage size available is 128GB.

There isn't much difference between the 2018 and 2020 models, 1 extra GPU core, the extra camera and more RAM (4GB vs 6GB) not counting the 1TB model. 2021 has the M1 and more RAM (8GB or 16GB).

If you paid $460, then it is obviously going to be a 2018 model. There is pretty much zero chance of getting the newest model for that price.

Doesn’t the 2020 pro also start at 128GB of storage ?
EDIT:? Sorry I just noticed you did say the 2020 & 2021 started at 128GB

If it was listed as 3rd gen and you received a 1st gen then the description was not accurate and you can ask for a refund. Do you happen to have a link to the listing?

I actually bought a M1 iPad Pro 11 256gb Cellular for $400, on OfferUp with warranty till 6/22 - this was 3 months ago AND I added a data plan. 5G is blazing fast where I live. So it is possible.
