Seems I turned on iCloud Drive at some point, maybe when setting up the Mac Studio. Not necessarily that keen on it as I'm always getting Drive is full messages and have no real desire to pay more.

I turned off iCloud Drive on my Studio in settings just now and all my folders disappeared! Turned the iCloud Drive back on and the folders reappeared but the folders are empty. Holy mother of God.

How can I get all my files and images stored physically back on my Studio and turn iCloud Drive off without losing anything? I'm hoping the folders now start to refill and no permanent loss happened here.

Pretty scary and not what I expected. Thought Drive would just back everything up!

I am not certain this will address your issue, but I find this guy very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to basic Mac operations and how they work. You may have already looked into this and apologies if you have, but I thought I would offer it up:
