I really like the gps in my iPhone, and use it a decent amount. It works ok, but could deffinatly be better. There's some lag that could be dialed out, although I'm not sure if it's the reciever or the phones proccesor that's causing it, although I would assume it's more the reciever as Tom Tom and some of the others have kits with upgraded gps kits. So what do you guys think?

We know it's not on top of Apple's priority, and it isn't trying to be a TomTom or other GPS kit. It's an accessory to compliment the phone, and as long as it works, I doubt Apple would go nuts on it. But I won't be surprised if they do swap it for an improved GPS chip.
It would be nice, but I don't think its going to happen.

So if they have a chip thats working well for them and its not too much of a power hog, why mess with it.
Although when releasing iPhone OS 4.0 Jobs said GPS is a power hog for the iPhone.
What makes GPS a power hog? The chip to receive the GPS signals? Or all the math strain it puts on the CPU? As far as Ive been told GPS is extremely math intensive on CPU's.
It would be in Apples interest to replace it if could use less juice.

If I remember correctly the gps is built into the broadcom 3G chip, so I imagine that if broadcom updated the chip itself, apple will use the newer, hopefully better, chip design.
they'll probably use the same one that's in the ipad 3g so just wait to see what chip is in the ipad
Again I will say they are not going to put in a new GPS for a better GPS, they would only change it for better battery life if they were to mess with it. But Apple has GPS in the phone, the feature is there when you need it. Its just there its not perfect and its not Apples focus. At least this is how I think they feel about it.

to include the iphone 3g and iphone 3gs??? That's hardly enough devices to make a claim that ALL apple devices always include the same chip.
I think if the iPad 3g uses the same chip then your statement will hold more credence.
