Hi, I'm a teacher in Taiwan that travels a lot. I also help schools do presentations for graduation ceremonies and things like that. The money isn't bad. I have a background in film production and music, although not extensive.
More and more, I find myself using my '24 to do a lot of sound design and now I'm getting into video as well. I'm starting to really like it, now that I almost have some of the the tools for the job. The learning curve is manageable, and I'm seeing a future in this kind of thing, as lots of other teachers couldn't be bothered.
The problem is, I'm not portable. For instance, I'm creating a sound and video show to go along with a childrens graduation performance in a while. I want to be able to MC the show and also control the rate of which the accompanying files come. I want to be able to plug a computer into the board as well. The school is planning to hire a sound and video crew for this event. My job is to provide some sound, flash, and content.
previously, I've used free audio editors and basic photo apps to do the job, but there have been problems in ease of use and fluidity in the performance. I've basically been burning a disk and using a cd player on pause and play. Works, but not good enough.
I've been tinkering with Garageband and also Imovie, and I think sooner or later this will work out well. I'm kind of a luddite in terms of being really good with these apps as of now, but hoping for ideas and inspiration.
Also, what I really want to know is, will a base model macbook (with extra RAM) do this job well in terms of handling multimedia presentations and projectors and going out to sound boards and all that? What about Capturing live video of the event from 2 or more cameras? How about capturing live sound from a sound board? What do I need? Can a macbook handle this?
I'm also thinking about getting a portable projector and using a macbook to make my classroom more multimedia. I'm basically freelance and I make enough money, but I want to make things, well, better. Maybe Keynote is a good tool for me as well. If I did a good job with my prep, I could package my lessons and sell them, maybe.
It's like , I KNOW I can do this, but not sure where or how to start. I have a lot to learn, thats for sure. The new base model macbooks are a good price, I think.
I have some money saved for a good external sound card and other tools so don't be shy in the suggestions, budget or otherwise.
