I have been pluging along with my mid 2009 24" 2.93 Ghtz imac for a while now. I must say as my first mac it has been a complete joy to use. I did the usual ram upgrade to 8 gigs and truth be told there is nothing wrong with it. That is until I started dabling with Final Cut Pro X. I absolutely love the software but I think 8 gigs of ram and a pair of hamsters isn't enough horse power.
so now I am thinking of upgrading to 8 hamsters and 24 gigs of ram.

So now I'm looking in the usual places at used mac pro's. It seems the average price for a used 8 core machine is between 1500 and 1700. Do these sound like reasonable prices?

Take into consideration buying a single-CPU Mac Pro 4,1 or 5,1 and upgrading it to a W3680 3.33GHz 6-core.

Yes, that's 6 cores vs. 8, but for the money you pay for the Mac Pro plus the CPU you would only get a sub-3GHz 8-core.
