Thinking about canceling my iPad 3G order.....

I'm seriously thinking about not selling my iPad wifi model and canceling my Apple order for the 3G version. I'm thinking about just getting the palm pre and tethering it to my iPad.

Have anybody else kept their wifi version ipads and just tethered them instead of getting the 3G version?

You are not the first like that other person said. Many have done that and it makes good sense if you can afford the extra cost etc. Get all your ducks in a row and go for it if everything about the tethering looks good to you. :)

Yeah great, do whatever you want to do, but seriously, do we really need a thread for every flippin decision everyone makes?

Well gee whiz mate, I was under the impression this was a forum where anyone can post something. That's what people do. Don't like the subject line? Well, you can skip it. No need to be rude to the OP.

To the OP, it depends on your phone needs and willingness to spend money. Having 3G is very convenient, but to save some money you can tether off your cellphone. But remember that tethering kills cellphone battery, and draining your cellphone battery could leave you unable to use it to make phone calls. Depends on your usage patterns. I'd rather pay $30 a month and leave my cellphone alone. :)

Thanks for replying.

Yeah...I was kinda thinking that it would drain my battery. But the main reason for getting a 3g version is, in my opinion, to have constant internet access especially for people that is extremely on the move.

Well I am on the move a lot between work and home. And I do take my ipad with me sometimes. However, I work in a high school and in order for me to get 3g service, I would have to take the ipad outside to use it. And I'ma Officer so that's not always convenient. And at home, I have wifi...so no need for 3G again.

If I take my ipad anywhere else....and that's a big "IF" it would be to my parents house. Which is actually the only time I may need tethering.

So that's why I'm thinking to just go the wifi route.
 
I quite enjoy being at home and poof....connected to WiFi...

then...out and about, slide to unlock....poof 3g.

I was at the hospital today and my iPad 3G had better reception than my sprint BB.

I'm one of those guys who believes it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. With the arrangement Apple and AT&T have with no contract, and the added bonus of a GPS, I think the 3G is a better option, cost notwithstanding.

That's cool and understand that also. It's nice to always have constant internet access. But I don't take my ipad that many places but to work. I actually take it with me cause I fear that my kids would mes with it :D

And the hospitals I've been to at least out here where I live all have wifi.

I guess I'm trying to find a good reason to get the 3g version. But all reasons don't apply to me.....I'm stuck...lol :eek:

And if I really wanted that constant or quick internet, then I could use the palm pre tethering.

I just went through the same thing last week and ultimately decided to sell my WiFi on craigslist (for full price) and bought a 3G on 3G launch day. I thought about tethering but there are a few reasons why I decided against that idea. For one, I've played around with jailbreaking my iPhone, and although it works, it's really unstable and I was getting freeze-ups and slowdowns and weird stuff happening, which is to be expected. Also I'm definitely going to want to install OS 4.0 when it comes out. If I did that on my iPhone, then I would lose tethering until the next jailbreak comes out. And also I'm not that keen on breaking AT&T's terms of service and worrying about whether or not they will nail me for it later.

Ultimately I decided it was better in the long run to just go ahead and get the 3G pad. If you really don't mind spending a little extra time, you could probably make a few bucks shipping your WiFi overseas. The resale value on these things is really high right now, so I figured it was a good time to sell the old one and buy a new one. YMMV

I'm not trying to talk you into anything, but keep in mind that the 3G also has a GPS chip. It makes an awesome GPS in the car with the huge screen. I use it with Navigon and it's super fast. Way faster than my iPhone. It looks great even though they haven't updated for the iPad yet. When they do, it will be even better.

I think the bottom line is: get the 3G if you can easily afford it. You never know what turns your life may take and you would kick yourself if you ended up needing it. But if money is tight, stick with what you've got.

I don't have a iphone anymore so I wouldn't be tethering to that. And from what I read, Sprint allows tethering with the Palm Pre. I had a HTc Hero that I rooted and tethered that to my ipad and believe it or not but I couldn't tell the difference between my wifi connection and being tethered. Both were great. I watched a youtube video and everything while being tethered.

One thing that I do like about the 3g is the fact that it has real GPS. that is one feature a lone that I like. But I also have a standalone GPS unit that my wife bought me...

I guess I have to essess if I really need a 3g model and also where am I goingto take it...lol

The only thing I'll be carrying is a cellphone (Palm Pre) and my iPad (if I have too). That's only 2 things. I'm quite sure people are still carrying their cellphones in addition to their ipad.

I had my doubts. Ultimately, I don't think I want to rely on another device to get connectively to my iPad in non wifi areas.

I drain out my phone from tethering means I have no 3g phone or iPad.
