Thinking about crossing over

Hi all,

I am thinking about switching over to Apple after my Laptop's fille system died w/o warning and took my photos, schools papers and most of my CD collection with it.

I was wondering what advantages you see in switching over to Mac Vs sticking with windows and any disadvantages. I plan on surfing the web, e-mail, light photo duty, and typing paper as I am still a student and keeping some rental property records

This has been asked hundreds of times...your best bet would be to browse/search these boards.

But for what you want to do, a Mac would be great. Advantage: NO Viruses, spyware, or any of that stuff. It just works. iPhoto would certainly take care of your light photo duty. There are many free/open source text editors for your paper typing stuff--or just use Text edit. MS Office works well, too.

And one suggestion..it sounds like you lost a lot when your old computer crashed--ALWAYS BACKUP. ALWAYS. Multiple Backups, if you can. This goes for any computer--Apple, Linux, or Windows PC.

Two things.

Number 1: backup your data whatever you decide to buy.
Number 2: buy a Mac

NOTE: This will be much easier in Leopard because of Time Machine. Makes me feel good and happy.
O yea, definitley get a mac. Ive been using PC my whole life. Got a MAC and LOVED it. no viruses or any crap. just pure performance.

I think it is mostly personal preference. My best suggestion is try one out at an Apple Store or use a friend's. See if it works for YOU.

As far as the programs on the Mac:

• Web - Safari, Camino, Firefox and probably lots more
• Typing papers - Microsoft Office or iWork
• Photo Editor/Manager - iPhoto will do pretty much everything most people would need
• E-Mail - Entourage (Office) or Mail.app

I'm not sure how you currently keep track of your rental stuff now....

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with a Mac otherwise you are just going to resent yourself.

I switched to a Mac for the stability more than anything, but its still important to keep backups just in case.

You can check prices at retail, education and refurb for the best solution that suite your needs.

If you're looking for a more powerful desktop, the Core Duo iMac is the way to go.

If you already have a great display and your needs are basic, then a Mac mini
might cover you.

Try to configure a system that will cover all your needs for the next 3 years and leave room for more.
