Thinking about dropping Flicker Pro

I just don’t see the value in Flicker anymore. Now that it’s $50 a year for a pro account I think I may drop them. I have about 9,000 photos on the site. My main use of Flicker was to host my late Dad’s family photos he took over 60 years. It’s about 5000+ photos that I scanned a few years ago. I also have a copy of these photos on google photos and it’s free. I also don’t have the engagement and feed back for my personal photography on Flicker. I get more views from this site and 500PX. Anyone else moving on or have found a flicker replacement?

I only have a few hundred so I'm good. I was thinking of opening another account just for clients or friends and have a few their too. I have most of my images on my own website, Random stuff on facebook and instagram and that's pretty much it.

Whatever you feel comfortable just do it.

I have stopped posting there. I only joined to host photos on this forum, but that’s not needed since we moved to the new software.
I kept on posting there, but never went Pro.

I see people with thousands of followers who post rubbish, and people who post award winning stuff with hardly any.

I think it’s had it’s day.

It’s the same story with most of the photo sharing sites as far as I can see. It’s more to do with your promotional activities than anything you post. I’ve seen profiles on Instagram with thousands of followers and no pictures at all!

Many people buy these followers… and they are very easy to spot.
But apparently they feel great having a huge number of useless unengaging "followers".

Yeah or.... My wife's cousin posts the same formula selfies over and over but because she is a shapely blonde with ample cleavage shall we say, then she gets thousands of followers while my legit trying to learn a skill feed hovers at 160.... Not that I am jealous or anything! Lol

Damnit, 159 followers now....

True though, I keep getting people follow me trying to trick me into following them back, then in a day they unfollow me. I refuse to be someone’s link building campaign target.

Yes, my current stats, 204 followers, however, 759 people have unfollowed me in the last 12 months! Either I'm disappointing a lot of people or there's something fishy going on! A fairly well known photographer has also unfollowed me twice. I guess he has paid a company to expand his following. The very worst one though is people who comment something like "Great capture. Now come and look at my profile, like my latest post, leave a gushing comment and follow me!".

Do not let the 759 unfollows throw you. That is straight up follow/unfollow tactics. It is a well known link building technique on Instagram that I hope they ban soon. What they do is they mass follow a few thousand profiles because the sheeple tend to do the whole “OO, someone loves me, I am popular” thing and click follow back. The link builders then mass unfollow a few days later. Because we are too lazy, we don’t go back in and unfollow them too.

The check my feed and like my stuff is just link building. Feckin hate link pirates!

A. You legitimately enjoy their work
B. Who stay following you. The second they unfollow, bin them.
C. Who don’t bait and switch you by posting nice landscape switching to soft core you know what shortly after. I am sick of this one. Followed someone who posted lovely long exposures and then they changed to long exposures of the female kind.

Very kind of you to say so. I made a real effort over the last year to get my Instagram moving but haven't had much success. I think I need to have a more interesting back-story rather than just leaving the images to speak for themselves.

The irony with the Miura images is that I shot them on holiday while travelling light with minimal gear. They turned out better than many of my more carefully planned shoots with extensive lighting and fancy gear. Keeping it simple is often the best way!

Couldn’t agree more. If followers means so much to you that you’ll do anything to get them, what does that say about you?
If people follow me, great. If not, I’ll not lose any sleep over it.

Just looked at your instagram after reading Ken’s comments. Damn, those are promo material quality right there. Is that the kind of thing you do or are these photos just your passion?

Thanks! It’s both work and pleasure really. I’m a graphic designer turned photographer. My aim is to be shooting advertising etc for the big car brands but day to day it’s mostly products and car components. This week I’m shooting stationery for an e-commerce website. Most of my portfolio/instagram is personal work or for private individuals. I find my work is improving quickly since I started putting some serious time creating my own projects.
