Thinking about getting a rev B w/ HD.. quick question

I've read plenty of posts about whether or not the air is for me, and I think it fits my needs perfectly. My question is do I really need the SSD?

My situation is I would be using it purely when I travel. Web surfing, itunes, and movies off of an external HD. So do I need to fork out the extra cash for the SSD?

Also, given what I will be using it for, would it benefit me at all if I went the the Macbook Pro? I honestly don't mind the extra weight, but a new MBP vs a refurb Rev B w/ 120 HD are very similar in price. And if no big difference for what I need, then I might as well go with the air.

I'm not a huge computer guy, but is it correct when saying that playing movies off an external HD it won't matter which type of computer you are using? it only matters how good the external HD is? Thanks!!

I would definitely recommend the SSD, it transforms the speed of the air remarkably.

However, i am not sure about gaming (i am not a gamer myself). I would imagine both will be as good.

Looking at your post i would say 13" MBP will suits your need more.

As for the HD question, yes it matter what computer you use to watch movies, though i don't think't you will notice much of a difference between the air and the MBP if you connect them to external monitor.

not much of a gamer either. How does the ssd transform it that much? I understand boot times and opening apps... but I don't care about the extra seconds I have to wait. The only things I do are web browse, itunes, and movies. I have 2 500GB HDs full of movies.

I'm still a little confused on whether the SSD, or even a MBP will benefit me when playing movies off my external HD. Thanks!

Nobody actually 'needs' the benefits of SSD as they are actually small benefits: a second saved here, 2 seconds saved there, computer boots a little faster etc....

If you are asking if you need a SSD - then it means you don't need it and the HDD will serve you just fine.

well if it's just seconds here and there, then you are correct, I don't need it. I was just wondering if the SSD helps in other areas or if the MBA performs poorly without it, with rainbows often, or if the SSD will assist with my needs for watching movies off an external HD. I think the benefits of SSD are much greater than many people say it is.

1 second? I have an MBA with SSD and its much more than "1" second compared vs the 4200 stock HD that the air comes with.

Now if you are comparing it to a 7200rpm hd then maybe the benefits are "less"

Overall the SSD makes the entire computer faster.

I would recommened it especially right not when the non SSD is 1500 and the one with is 1800. I think its worth the 300 with the little bit of cpu bump thrown in.

I like the SSD mostly because my hands are sensitive to vibration (yes, that's what she said) and I move around a lot with my laptop. I'll pick it up and take it from a desk to the kitchen or down the block to wait for a pizza and stuff like that. It's nice not having to wait for a head to park or for it to spin up to be used.

Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to cap the price at around $1200 so thats why I'm tossing back and forth a new MBP or a Rev B with 120GB HD as they are both around $1200. I'm just not sure which one is better for the few things I would use it for stated in previous posts.

for your budget I would skip the SSD, it is still a heavy premium for the size of hd you get.

I love SSD but I agree its still too expensive. I have it because I have extra storage, and ike 3 other computers with enough space for all I would ever need to store.

For light usage you'll see much more of a difference with SSD than with extra power of MBP.

If you don't know if you need SSD, you probably never used one. HDD/SSD is a little like OS X/Windows - very few people switch the other way willingly .
