Thinking About Getting A Windows 8 Tablet

I have been looking at a couple of Windows 8 tablets: the Asus Vivotab Smart, the Surface Pro and the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2. My big question is how necessary an Active digitizer for the desktop? I plan on using it a lot without the keyboard and am wondering how much of a pain the desktop is to use without a stylus? Also, the Vivotab seems pretty cheap compared to other Atom tablets, how does the build quality compare to other Atom tablets? I am a big believer you get what you pay for.

One thing to keep in mind, is I believe new Surface tablets are due in the fall. It might not be a bad idea to wait. Or pick up this generation of Surface at a reduced rate when the new ones hit.
