i am really considering jailbreaking my iphone more and more. Every other day i wish that i had a video recording option on my phone, and every other day i think that i COULD have one if i just jailbroke my iphone.. same with MMS.

Those are two things that i REALLY want, as with MOST people around here. I am a little frustrated that they are not available in the app store, as that is what i was banking on..

the GOOD thing is that not all is lost because there is the option to jailbreak. I'm just scared. I am really tech savvy for the most part. I can figure out most things, but i have some questions.

Does it cost money to jailbreak? Do you have to purvchase software? The only thing i found online was the any network sims. I'm not concerned with this as i have ATT and pay for the regular 2G data plan and all that.

What is the likely hood that i will brick my phone? How sophisticated is the jailbreaking process?

Can i just revert back to the regular OS without the jailbreak?? will there be any evidence if i have to turn it in under warranty? I was thinking about purchasing apple care for my phone when the regular warranty runs out.

Is it worth jailbreaking for just those two apps? Whats the likely hood that we MIGHT see something like this coming from apple? (from what i read, its not looking good)

What ELSE would i get if i jailbroke my iphone? Are there other apps that would be exciting for me? or other options that normally wouldnt be there?

THANKS FOR READING AND LOOKING FORWARD TO ANSWERS>

One thing that may help you decide, and if you haven't already done so, is to read through the guides that describe the process. Depending on your platform, you will use a different tool, but the process is pretty much the same.

If you follow the instructions to the T, there really is little chance that you will brick your phone. Espicially if you're only JBing and not unlocking. Still it is at your own risk!

There are many free applications that you may enjoy. I think one of the best features is the themes to be able to customize the interface your way. Qik, the video streaming service is good, fun. But the video quality is what you'd expect from a cell phone. I think this works because it doesn't record video to the phone, it streams it to your account like a webcam, and saves it there.

WOAH. It's really nowhere near as big a deal as you're making it out to be. Try it out. There are like 3 steps to the process now. If you don't like it, put it back to normal. That's all there is to it.

There is only one way to screw up your iphone, and that would occur if you were to unplug it during the jailbreak process, at just the right time while it was writing a couple critical files. ...just as you'd also be equally screwed if you did that while it was writing those files in the middle of an official update. Don't unplug your iphone while it's upgrading. The rest, is childs play.

thanks for the clarification. I'm only making it a big deal because i have never done it, and honeslty, it scares me. It scares me because i LOVE my iphone, and i really dont want to brick it. I also really dont want to void the warranty for something silly like the absolute want for MMS and Video.

So i just want to clarify the video app for a second. It does NOT record video to your iphone, it streams it to the web and stores it there? So i have to go to the internet in order to retreive and play any video.

Also, how is the MMS app (swirly i believe it is called) Does it work just as a normal phone's MMS would work? Is recieving MMS just as easy?

Those are really the ONLY reasons for wanting to jailbreak> the fancy skins and all that are nice, but not really nessecary. I reallywish apple would just add those two things, but now i'm beating a dead horse.

so finally, just for one last clarification.. if i use the method of jailbreaking that you suggest, and my phone needs to go in for some repair or something, i COULD revert back to the intital operating system with no evidence of jailbreak

The Dev Team recently released quickpwn which enables you to jailbreak your phone without going through the loooong process of restoring it.
Prior to this I had never jailbroken my phone, but it was so easy so I decided to do it. If you ever want to go back to the factory settings you can just restore it and it wont leave a trace of any jailbreaking.

I used the Flixwagon app to broadcast to the internet and it doesn't store on your phone but is stored on their website.

Bossprefs allows you to disable Apple's kill switch.

I haven't heard of MMS, but I'm interested!

Don't be scared! The biggest issue is encountering some error which won't hurt the phone, but may make you start over whichever method you use. But if you follow the steps exactly you shouldn't see any errors.

I haven't heard of Flixwagon, but it sounds like it works the same way as Qik. Niether will a actually record a video to your phone. So you will have to view them on the web, or if you get creative you can use a web video download tool to capture it from the web and convert it for the iphone. Therer's also a nice Cydia app that allows you to save you tube video to your phone.
