I have a pretty well spec'd M1 Max I've been using for years now. I noticed that I'm barely using 1tb of space on this computer. In the past I used the space to edit home movies, but I haven't done it enough to warranty the Apple Tax on the hard drive.

I'm considering selling it for around $2k, and spending about $2700 for the newer M4 Pro base model computer (maybe upgrade to 2tb). Would that be worth it in my situation? Seems like single core benchmarks and multi core stuff is significantly higher in the M4 computers.

Other perks would be a tax write off, and a new battery (this one isn't bad but has 300 cycles, 86% battery).

Should I "upgrade"? Or will I not notice any improvements for casual use?

This M1 Max has been a great computer! Are there any downgrades with the M4 Pro?

Here's the usual answer. Is there anything you need your M1 Max to do that it doesn't do well (enough)? If yes, get the new computer, if not keep the old one.

Or if you just want a shiny new toy for the sake of it, that's ok, just be honest about the FOMO, no need to pretend you need it when that's not the case.

I've been in the same boat, most of the time I buy new computers when I need them, but occasionally I do buy something, or get higher specs, just because I want to.

It can be fun to get excited about a new gadget, and as long as there is appreciation that doesn't wear off very quickly it's not necessarily unhealthy.

If you keep on buying new stuff that you don't need without gratitude and appreciation then you're just addicted to the rush of getting something new.

In that case you should reconsider your life choices and find better ways to fill the emotional void that always makes you look for the next rush.

Personally, I would keep the old system. If that system is doing everything you need, then keep it.

If you want to upgrade because you want to, then go ahead. I upgraded because I wanted to, not because I needed to upgrade. It's your money.
