Hey, I'm thinking about getting an AppleTV... Literally considering the purchase tonight. I'm just wondering if the AppleTV is able to get software updates like the other iOS devices (for example adding an app store) or if such an update will require a new purchase (similar to those with the 1st gen aTV who wanted netflix). Thank you for the (hopefully) fast responses.

Yep, it will get software updates just like the other iOS devices. In fact, an update is expected this month to enable Airplay. There is a menu item under Settings for software updates.

Are you talking buying an ATV1 or ATV2? ATV1 is unlikely to get an update in the near future as it is basically EOL.

ATV2 however will be updated in the near future to iOS4.2which as the other poster commented will include airplay etc. There is no current outlook for an app store on ATV2 however we live in hope knowing that the ATV2 should be capable of supporting this.

(I am going to Assume you are going to buy the new ATV), what are you going to use it for. I have read many threads on here where folks have not fully understood what this device is for or capable of.
