Probably just like all of the imac buyers out there i was shocked to see $1000 added to my $1500 computer to double the ram. I might have done it if they would have upgraded to a 30" monitor or something but they dont lol.

When would you consider going from 4gb to 8gb?

Now my other question(s) is, is 8gb the max for the new imac (i got the base 24" btw). Probaby the main question is, what is the best bang for the buck memory and where should i look to buy it from?

Thank you,
Justin

If all you do is writing, surfing, maybe working in iPhoto and iMovie and other normal stuff, you don't really need more than 4GB right now. 8GB will come handy with more complex software than Safari or even iMovie.

But if you do more than just the normal stuff, get as much RAM as you can pay for.

Also 8GB (2x4GB sticks) of RAM will cost you around 6-800 USD if you go by third party sellers.

And currently 8GB is the maximum RAM, as there are no bigger RAM sticks than 4GB with 204 pins to prove if the chipset allows more than 8GB of RAM.

NEVER BUY RAM FROM APPLE!!!!

Their prices are ridiculous. 8GB is very expensive at the moment but it's coming down all the time, so within a year or so, it should be at reasonable price range.

Do you even need 8GB? I would get Mac Pro instead if you do, because quad MP can take 16GB and costs the same as iMac with 8GB

I don't need it but when I bought my last mac I didn't think I needed to upgrade but that one got outdated fast. That's why I'm asking now, so I don't fall behind too quickly. I'm not using much right now past a few apple programs that come with the computer, and using 3 or 4 at once.

Thanks... I like this site already and can see myself asking a lot more questions
