Hello guys. I currently have a 2.4ghz MacBook Pro (with the 2 graphic processors) with the 24inch Apple Cinema Display. I also have an iPad. In the 6months I have had the iPad, i have not moved the macbook pro from its little cubby space thats plugged into the display. (Meaning it has satisfied most of my portable needs) I am thinking about selling the display and mbp for a 21inch iMac. is this a good idea?

Thinking about selling my Macbook Pro and Cinema for iMac (suggestions please!)

I guess my biggest issue is that I have the MacBook Pro connected to a Cinema Display. Meaning its mostly in clamshell mode and gets pretty hot, the fans go ect. Basically the Macbook Pro is not being used as a portable computer, and I don't know if its the ocd, or minimalist in me, but i hate having two portables when one is not being used as one. I do like the option to use the Pro as a portable, but in 6 months i have not..
I usually use the computer for School work, iPhoto, internet, RSS feeds, Twitter and the most intensive would be Recording music through garage band (used to use logic, but i felt it was to much for my needs even if i could use it pretty well. but i may use it again in the future)

I had the same problem as you and sold it all for a iMac
Never looked back
Still use the ipad for everything else where I need a port device and the main setup was a 21.5" imac. Now sold and brought a 27" iMac
I like the keyboard and mouse setup with a LED screen all in-one option
Works well for me.
I had a 2.53 MBP with screen and the fans were going all the time. Not with the iMac

My girlfriend was going through the same issue. Running her Macbook to a monitor, then speakers, then USB hubs.... it just made a tangled mess when she wanted to use it elsewhere.
She ditched the monitor and bought an iMac and has been much happier since. The Macbook is now just a travel machine if she needs it. All her important stuff can sit in Dropbox so she has it on the road if she needs it.
Plus the iMac screen is so sexy (though if you have a Cinema Display you are used to that

)Do NOT do this. By forcing the machine to keep running while in clamshell, you're covering all the ventilation and you've a good chance of causing some pretty nasty damage. Lots of machines go to the Genius bar because of this.
I think it makes sense to go with the iMac, but I highly recommend the 27" over the 21.5" since your coming from the 24" Cinema Display. If you're going to be eating some money on the whole deal, you at least want to feel like you've "upgraded" in some way, and the 27" iMac with it's bigger screen size and better processor will make you feel like the switch was worth it
Buy a 50" HDTV, Buy A MacBook of any sort.
Purchase a HDMI to HDMI cable & a Mini Display to HDMI port.
*Get the longes HDMI to HDMI cable you can find
Use your laptop around the house and when you want a better experience, plug it into your HDTV to play games, movies, TV shows, or even browse the web.
Not trying to take you away from the iMac 27". I actually bought it but I hated being secluded to a desk all the time when doing college work so I sold it and got a MacBook Air and looking into getting a 50"HDTV later.
