You can sync your music to the AppleTV and play it from it. Obviously you are limited by the HDD size in the Apple TV.

Through iTunes, you can choose what you sync, (eg just Music and not Films), if you just wanted it as a jukebox.

See what the above poster said. It's not a total noob question because I might now know if I didn't own one. But considering the massive amount of stuff I have, storing it all on the ATV is kinda impossible. Best idea is to store all of your music and photos on there but let the videos stream. That's all I can do until Apple makes a 10TB ATV.

The small hard drive is the biggest drawback of the ATV. I have one its good, but I have a massive library of movies and shows etc and syncing a portion of it is not worth the time it takes so I am pretty much forced to run my Mac as well as the ATV to watch stuff.

If you are not sure just yet about purchasing one hold out until the end of January as there is a slim possibility the ATV may get updated with bigger hard drives at MacWorld.

^ What he said.

The Apple TV is great for streaming, and it works well for me as my iMac is on (virtually) all the time anyway.

However, my iTunes folder is now 250 gb in size, and even the Apple TV with the bigger hard drive (160 gb) evidently wouldn't be enough, let alone the 40 gb Apple TV I was (very generously) given.

The Apple TV (Not Hacked) can not be the Primary Storage Location for your ITunes Library, but you can choose what files you copy (sync) to the ATV and these files can be played without having you Laptop turn on.

If you want to play a files that you have not synced to the ATV you will need the Laptop turned on with Itunes running. At this point you can steam the file to the ATV or Sync it then play it.

I hope this helped.

Awesome. thanks everyone :) Thats all what i wanted to hear... now i just have to try and wait until after the macworld... just in case... hehehe
