Hi guys,

I'm thinking of buying a mini, but can't decide whether to get the base system, or customise it slightly. I'd be using it mainly as an HTPC, and possibly connecting a desktop monitor to it at a later date to use as a desktop. I know the base 2GB of RAM isn't great, and 4GB is much more ideal/future proof etc.

My question really is should I go for the extra RAM when I buy it, or should I buy the base 2GB and upgrade it myself (would buying separate RAM be cheaper?). Also was wondering your thoughts on whether it's worth upgrading the CPU?

Cheers,
Jon

I bought a base mini the other day with the intention of upgrading it - which I will, but it really runs great. Having fun! :)

Thanks for all the quick responses guys. Think I'll go for the base model and upgrade myself.

Now I have one more question - I'm thinking of getting a display to go with it - so I can connect it to my TV and use as an HTPC and to a display for a desktop computer. In your opinion, is the cinema display worth the money, or are there similar displays from other companies, that are comparable quality for less?

I'd be willing to reduce the size a little bit, but a large display would be quite important.

Thanks,

Jon

While you're at it, I would spend the little extra cash and upgrade to 6GB or 8GB or RAM. That way you'll only have to do it once.

4GB really isn't a whole lot these days.

My understanding the Mini is a pretty easy upgrade as far as RAM goes. It seems to be just remove a few screws near the bottom, like the older iMac G5(Rev B if I recall)

RAM is key, can't hurt to upgrade, definitely look at 3rd parties after you buy a base Mini(then based on its performance you can buy the RAM you think you need)

For an HTPC, there is no need for anything beyond the base configuration of 2.4 Ghz and 2 GB. I have a new Mini HTPC, spec'd as thus, and it performs marvelously for everything I've thrown at it. HTPC's do not need large amounts of memory, and they do not need crazy CPU speed either. 2.4 Ghz and 2 GB is more than plenty for 1080p playback from any file or media type. Save your money for something worthwhile, like a large Firewire 800 drive to house all your media.
