Thinking of buying an imac 27

I recently dropped close to £3000 on my macbook pro that is an absolute beast. 8 gigs ram, 256 solidstate, dual 2.66 i7 processors. As this thing is such a tank and what I primarily use it for is graphic and web design, I of course require some more screen real estate. This prompted me to immediately consider buying one of the 27 apple displays. Upon pondering my purchase I realized that for about an extra 1/3 of the price I can get an imac.

How possible is connecting my macbook pro to my imacs screen? I have heard that with the most recent macbook pros and recent imacs, you are able to do so, but does anybody have any experience with it?

Also, would I be able to hook my xbox 360 up to my imac? Having one screen that can do these tasks plus contain a slick computer would be great, so any advice or help is very welcome.

As long as you get a 27" iMac, you can use it as a display since it has video input. For MBP, you will just need a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable but for X360, you will need a a separate box (e.g. Kanex XD).

Don't get too excited. The 27" iMac's video input sources will only display at 720p. Kind of lame.

To clarify - it's a limitation of the iMac. It only supports input sources of 720p or its native resolution of 2560x1440. I've never found a satisfactory reason for this, as it's really a simple function of the display's EDID data and could be updated with firmware. My conspiracy theory, to be taken with a grain of salt: Apple doesn't want full HD sources to display on their devices because they don't want people to see the benefit of 1080p over their own 720p iTunes movie offerings.
