thinking of buying the intel imac

oh boy the 20incher would be a beauty to buy but its just way to much money for me lol.

any ways.. im gonna sell my desktop pc and get about 700 for that, plus some money i have saved and a few other paychecks.

i have a few questions about the imac though..

i realise rosetta is going to slow down my performance in photoshop, but i can wait for when photoshop goes universal. question is.. will i be able to do simple tasks such as retouching etc with little low performance?

how well will pro aps like final cut and aperture run on one of these new machines .. i mean, is an imac good / decent for pro aps..

also, whats the largest resoloution on the 17inch imac?

There are a few threads around with results from and links to benchmark tests, including using Photoshop.

The new iMacs appear to be pretty fast for the more demanding apps, but no real pro app tests have been done as the apps have not been converted to run natively on the Intel Macs yet. The iLife suite is universal however, and results on these apps are pretty good so far.

I just played around with both 17 and 20 inch iMacs today in the Apple Store, and even with 512MB of RAM (which is not enough really) they ran well. Plenty faster than my mini

As for resolution, the 17" has a max of 1440 * 900.

The resolution was good, certainly compared to my 17" CRT. I've been trying to decide between the 17" and 20" iMac and I think after today the 17" is just ahead.

Sure the 20" screen is bigger, brighter, nicer and has a wider viewing angle, but it's also quite a bit more expensive.

And yes, you can output to another monitor and have 2 different displays. I'm planning on using my old CRT this way.

Yes and I am almost certain that you can span across two monitors. As long as you've got enough ram, the iMac will be great, even using Photoshop through Rosetta. As others have said, it takes a lil bit for it start, but then it is pretty snappy....not bad, it should DEF be able to get you through until Universal Binaries are out, as it seems like you are doing only minor Photoshop work.

Absolutely, it spans. Digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200, and analog resolutions up to 2045 x 1536. I don't have Photoshop (only Photoshop Elements 3.0, which doesn't run), but from what I've heard it'll work OK for minor tasks.

direzz, are you by any chance a student? If you are you can get an educational discount through the educational store of about 10%. If you're at Uni you might be able to get the university discount of about 15% by ordering through the apple university store site whilst on campus. That could possibly bring down the cost of the 20" iMac to not much more than you're expecting to pay for the 17" model.

Come on, that's not exactly accurate is it? All of OS X, iLife and iWork are universal, the rest of the Apple pro apps will be universal in the next couple of months leaving only Adobe and Microsoft apps taking a while longer.

If ever.... Not the Apple apps, I use tons more third party apps that Apple apps. Very few have been UB'ed. (Hands off, IM coining that phrase!)
