Has anyone ditched their dektop and laptop for an iPad?

I am tired of having a desktop and laptop, and simply just like the iPad but I am wondering if anyone else has done this, thoughts, regrets?

You need a PC to install new iOS versions. Bad Idea to get rid of both. Maybe one but not both.

The iPad does NOT replace a computer, and in fact it needs one to depend on so I don't see why anyone would replace desktop + laptop for an iPad, one of them maybe, both is useless unless you have other fully satisfying computers ;)

Keep one.

Or, ditch both and get a cheap netbook (if you really don't need a notebook).

Ditch any of those, both have the same specs, I'd ditch the MacBook because you're already mobile with the iPad, or ditch the Mini because with the MacBook and you're iPad you would be 100% Mobile

Im thinking about doing the same. In that case I'd use the computer at my parents to update the OS.

Depending on your needs the iPad can definitely replace a desktop computer for daily use (even though you need one once in a while for updating etc)

Not only to update the firmware, but you also need the computer to backup the files, and to host the music library that sync with your iPad.

...nope, currently in Japan there is no 3G coverage for iPad due to disagreement with apple and softbank carrier... wireless is not so easy to find and lots of hotspots are not secure wireless.

If you need something really light, look at the Sony Vaio X1 or if you want something cheap get any netbook out these days with an N270 for about $260...

Pretty terrible idea. I love my iPad and use it more than my desktop and laptop combined but there are countless things it can't do (burn a CD/DVD, edit photos/video, print photos, etc.). Relying solely on an iPad is taking one step forward and two steps back.

Been there, done that. Didn't really work out like I thought it would.

The iPad needs the iOS 4 update BADLY- the lack of multitasking is really a downer, and as a result, I'm 10X more productive on my laptop. I really wanted to use my iPad as a MacBook replacement, but it just isn't. I'm tech-savvy and all, but I just can't make it work. I think the situation will be much improved with iOS 4 (Apple did a great job with its multitasking framework, it's really a gem on my 3GS).

Although I'm annoyed at Apple for only providing us with 256MB of RAM, especially when they were designing the iPhone at the same time with 512MB (that's for a device with a lower resolution display), and at AT&T for their 3G bait and switch.

I'm not a happy iPad owner for these reasons, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that not only will we get the all the iOS 4 features that iPhone users enjoy, but that we'll also get some innovative UI improvements that will really make the iPad useful.

If I were you, I'd probably get rid of your older MacBook and keep the desktop and iPad.

While you're at it I'd also sell your older iPhone to help fund the new iPad purchase.

OP, I would keep one of the computers that you have.

Uh, my iPad 3G works just fine! Been using it all over the place. :)

I think that what you mean to say, is that you cannot use an iPad 3G purchased outside of Japan because Softbank, at this time, does not offer/sell the micro-SIM for the iPad 3G. They only include it with iPad 3G's sold in Japan.
