I currently have a mid-2007 2.4gHz iMac that is getting old and slow due to its limited memory I suspect. I had been contemplating updating to a newer i7 iMac (probably late 2012) but I recently changed jobs where I will need to bring home work at times in the form of a Windows W7 laptop (DVI and HDMI outputs). Since Apple has not seen fit to provide DVI or HDMI inputs on the iMac to make use of the display, one alternative is to get an i7 Mac Mini and external monitor (such as a Dell 27"). This solution is somewhat cheaper than the iMac, but the processor is also not quite as fast (2.3 or 2.6 for the Mini vs. 3.1 or 3.4 for the iMac). Does anybody here have a similar configuration and use it for a Windows laptop monitor as well?

Actually my first Mac years ago was an original Mac Mini and I loved that thing, but soon replaced it with an iMac, and I've had them ever since. However since my new job is Windows-based I have considered going with a W7 or W8 desktop to replace my iMac (it would have to run my iTunes library, which is currently on an external FW disk). I've never used W8, but the new Dell XPS One 27 looks interesting and has an HDMI input (and output); I love how it is so user serviceable too (why can't Apple do the same?).

Have you thought of running Windows 7 or 8 via virtual? Parallels and VMWare Fusion come to mind.

You also could dual boot your home system with both Mac OSX and Windows 7.

As for Mac Mini, I have one and use Windows 7 in a virtual when I need to use 3 specific applications. Beyond that, OSX and the rest of my apps are more than enough.

Yes I suppose I could do a VM but then I would have to move the data from my laptop to the VM and then back when I'm done (my company does not allow personal machines to connect by VPN). Still that's a thought.

The quad 2.6 minis CPU

The iMac 3.4 CPU

There is a difference in CPU power but it is not as drastic as the clock speeds would make it out to be, as a consideration. Since output options on the mini include displayport, hdmi, DVI and VGA you could probably figure out a configuration that would alow the mini and the laptop cables to be plugged into the monitor at the same time.

If you get a desktop running Windows 8...scratch that, if you run Windows 8 at all, you will regret it. I never had a problem or issue with Vista yet I had many with 8.

If you like having a Mac and the experience of OS X then get another and run Windows 7 in Fusion/Parallels/Boot Camp.

I have windows 8 running in a VMware on my 2011 Mac mini and it works well for what it is. I also have windows 7 in a vm and of course it is perfect for all my windows needs. The Mac mini meets my needs as I do not play games on it. I have a windows 7 machine for that.

Other than running windows 8 to play with it I find it useless installed on a desk top.

In VMWare Fusion, you can share a folder on your host (Mac) system that both OSes can read/write to. So you will not have to transfer back and forth as you posted.

Good luck with what you decide.

I run W8 Pro in the free Virtual Box on OSX: awesome. Runs even smoother than on a real PC. Maybe not as speedy in the 3D department, but the rest is excellent.

I run Windows 8 Pro on my Mac Mini mid-2011 base model (16GB RAM upgraded) with Parallels 8 VM and it's awesome. It's fast, stable and a very enjoyable experience. Parallels 8 also has a PC to Mac migration feature (not sure if it works for Windows 8 or just for 7 and XP). I'm not too sure about the process of migrating Windows back to a PC.
