I currently have a mid-2007 2.4gHz iMac that is getting old and slow due to its limited memory I suspect. I had been contemplating updating to a newer i7 iMac (probably late 2012) but I recently changed jobs where I will need to bring home work at times in the form of a Windows W7 laptop (DVI and HDMI outputs). Since Apple has not seen fit to provide DVI or HDMI inputs on the iMac to make use of the display, one alternative is to get an i7 Mac Mini and external monitor (such as a Dell 27"). This solution is somewhat cheaper than the iMac, but the processor is also not quite as fast (2.3 or 2.6 for the Mini vs. 3.1 or 3.4 for the iMac). Does anybody here have a similar configuration and use it for a Windows laptop monitor as well?
Actually my first Mac years ago was an original Mac Mini and I loved that thing, but soon replaced it with an iMac, and I've had them ever since. However since my new job is Windows-based I have considered going with a W7 or W8 desktop to replace my iMac (it would have to run my iTunes library, which is currently on an external FW disk). I've never used W8, but the new Dell XPS One 27 looks interesting and has an HDMI input (and output); I love how it is so user serviceable too (why can't Apple do the same?).
