to get the extra memory from Apple or buy it and install it yourself from places like newegg or similar places? Drive and memory can I install myelf of need to get an Apple to install. I have build my own pcs for several years incl the newer quad cores... but liked the mac and decided to get a iMac.... suggestions? I was thinkning of getting a 2TB drive from Newegg and put it in myself... can I if it is a SATA drive? Thanks

What are you on about more memory? They all come with 4Gb as standard.

You may be confusing that with the hard drive. In which case, only buy the 27" if you need the larger screen.

Yes you can install a 2TB SATA yourself, if you can be bothered with the hassle.

Only advantage to buying memory from Apple is that it'll be covered by AppleCare, and they won't give you crap about having 3rd party memory in there if you need the computer serviced. Otherwise, it's easy to install yourself, and instructions for doing so are on Apple's support website.

4GB is pretty good for day-to-day stuff, so if you're on the fence I'd wait. You may not need more yet, and when you do need it it'll likely be even cheaper.

The hard drive is a different story. It's not technically user-installable, and swapping it out isn't at all straightforward. If you're not up for tearing the iMac apart, you won't be swapping it. However, external drives are pretty quick over the gigabit network interface and have become reasonably cheap, so again, you may need less internal drive space than you think.

With the ram it's always cheaper to purchase yourself. And if your worried about Applecare just remove the memory before you bring it in.

As an example. For the $200 they charge you for 4gb you can get 8gb here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226015

for $220 after rebate. This gives you 12gb vs the 8gb you would have for the same price. If you only want 8gb you can purchase the 2x2gb sticks for $100. Granted this is 1066 Ram but the 1333 will be along shortly.
