Thinking of Getting the 27" iMac...(Too Large?)

With OSX Lion around the corner, will Resolution Independence make the the 27" iMac from 2010 a great buy now?

I don't want to buy only to have my dad to complain of eye strain :rolleyes:

Also, can anyone recommend a good desk from Staples or elsewhere for the the 27" iMac?

I have a desk from Ikea - lustrous white, suits it well. Can't remember it's name, though...!

For me, the 27" display is a work of Apple genius. The first time one sees it, one almost inevitably thinks, 'Christ! That's huge...!!!'. But when you've been using it for a few days, you're sold. Hook, line, and sinker.

I don't know about where you are in the World but, over here, Apple give you 14 days to decide whether you're happy with it. If not, you can take it back... give them a call, and find out. Definitely see it 'in the home', if you can.

It's $1269 CAD for the iMac 27” - Core i3 3.2 Ghz refurb. Is this a good deal?

Also, is resolution independence from OSX Lion going to improve the 27" viewing experience?

When I upgraded from a 23" Cinema Display to a 27" Cinema Display I appreciated the size increase... for two days.

It is not "too large". You can run Adium, Twitter, Safari and Mail at very large window sizes, with no overlapping. I'm actually replacing the Mac Mini that's currently powering the 27" Cinema Display with a 27" iMac. Yes. Dual 27s.

I run a Mac Mini (Mid-2010) and 27" LED CD on a 4x2 IKEA Galant desk. I'm going to be building a custom desk/shelves into a closet that is slightly smaller than 4x2 (I think the desk will be 45.5" x 20", or 6 1/3 sqft.), because I've measured it out and I know it'll be plenty of space for a keyboard/mouse alongside what is effectively two 27" widescreen displays.

That's all the desk you "need" if you're not putting stacks of papers and magazines all over it.

Sorry, dude. I can't comment on value for money in Canadian dollars...!

And I've never heard of 'resolution independence', I'm afraid. I haven't really had my ear to the ground, over Lion.

For the first two days, my initial reaction was, "Yes! This is the extra space I've been needing. What was I thinking about ever getting a second display". On the third day not only was I used to it, I was *really* jonesing for yet more space when developing.

Meanwhile, I have a 27" iMac (completely decked out -- DIYing the memory to 16GB myself though) ordered. Because one 27" display isn't enough.
 
what kind of ram did u order and from where? can u please post a link, i want to max out my ram aswell but i dont know which one is the right one to buy for the new imacs

No problem. About Canadian dollars, it's worth more then the US dollar finally (1.03 US)! If you're from the Eurozone, I'm clueless myself (I think most Apple goods are expensive overseas anyways so converting values might be pointless) :p

1CAD = 1.04USD ($1269 = $1,315.30 US)
1CAD = 0.63GPB ($1269 = £801)
1CAD = 0.71EUR ($1269 = €902)

Not in the UK. Unless the salesman was doing me a favour... he said to me, "fourteen days, you can bring it back for a refund - no questions asked".
 
so everybody can buy an imac, try it and return it used after 14 days and apple doesnt care? that doesnt make much sense :confused:

£801, for that, sounds like a steal. The 27" screen, alone, in the UK, would cost more than that... But we Brits always get fisted on North American goods. Maybe ask a fellow Canadian.


EDIT: To give you some context - that machine would've been £1,399 new, over here. See whether the prices scale.

Everyone can, but not everyone does. I didn't, for one...!


It makes perfect sense. Many vendors have 'NQA' return periods. It demonstrates a confidence in the product, and encourages those buyers 'on the fence' to give it a try.

You could, but I think Apple is betting most people wouldn't, and the extra benefit might convince someone to take the jump, know they can safely return it without lose cash.

Hope someone can chime in their response on resolution independence though.
 
not that i will ever do that i was just wondering, thats nice of apple though, good to know.

The UK price is about the same as the Canadian new base model plus our 13% sales tax. I'm guessing your price doesn't even include VAT so it still looks more expensive.

Interesting though!
 
I wish Apple had a 24" model still.

That would be the perfect size screen for me =/

The 27" has 60% more pixels. Having come from a 23" HD Cinema Display in the past, you barely notice the extra physical size, but you REALLY appreciate the extra desktop space.
