But I know nothing of it :) a friend just told me that the main difference between the new mac mini and the previous version is that it has a new kind of RAM in it. Now I bought the most expensive model of the previous version about half a year ago, I think. My problem is that sometimes a browser or app will freeze for a little while (nothing major though) and the mouse shows that load icon. Also when I try and play a high definition movie on it I have to shut down any other app that is running or the picture will lag.

I should mention that I already bought 4 GB of RAM some months ago, because the standard version only had 2. So should I get the new kind - will it help and make things faster? Or is it more the processor's fault?

You can't simply put "faster" RAM in an older mini and speed it up. The speed of the RAM depends on the bus, which will not change. "New Kind" probably just means faster, not new kind.

Both the early 2009 and late 2009 Minis use the same RAM. So either your friend is wrong, or you're confused about the versions. Regardless, unless your RAM is defective, changing out 4GB of RAM for 4GB of RAM isn't going to fix your problem.

then he is wrong cause I'm certain that's what he said. So would anyone mind telling me the difference between the new model and the one from earlier this year? If it's noticeably better I might sell my current one and buy the new one with a loss of 100-200 dollars. Then again it would probably be smarter to stick with this one and wait a year or so...

The only difference is a minor speed bump and increase in hard drive capacity and installed RAM. If you got the high end mini now, compared to the high end from earlier this year, and the amount of RAM is equal, you might notice a slight difference in speed, but only when you're doing something very processor intensive.

I don't think you should be having any problems playing HD video on your current mini even with a couple other apps open. Are you sure you got the new RAM installed/seated correctly?

yeah I think so, but I might be wrong. I did follow a guide on youtube and when I check on my mini it says that I do have 4GB. But I don't know if they still might be installed incorrectly even though the mini reads them. But it sounds like the new one is only slightly better so Im gonna forget my obsession about always having the newest product available :D
