I'm not familiar with jailbreaking, and I'm not sure what the risks are. If I do jailbreak my phone will it run more slowly? Also, what is the possibility of it being bricked and unable to use? All I want to do is run Pandora and AOL Radio in the background...

I recommend

you do some reading all the info you need has been posted many many many times

quick answers

slower: yes but doubt you will notice
risk: you can't brick a Iphone!

the rest read I love backgrounder you might check Categories too! best reason to unlock iMO! and no reason apple shouldn't allow both of these!

How much slower are we talking about here? Will it still be snappier than the 3G?

Yes.

The slowdown depends on how much crap you add to the phone. Obviously running a streaming music app in the background will have more of an impact than not.

Just try it and if you don't like it restore.

Thanks.... I think I'm gonna do it when I have time.

The only reason why I jailbroke my iphone is so I can run apps in the background and it is essential to me. Right now I am on a 9 day motorcycle trip and I wanted my iphone to track us live via gps. If I was not running the background feature, I would only be tracked if I had that program up and running which meant I could not do other stuff.

Also I am using g-map for navigation and it is nice to be able to run it in the background. Normally every time you run g-map you have to hit the "I agree" button and then click on maps. When it is running in the background, I can quickly jump to another app, and then go back over to g-map without have to go through all the menus again.

To me, the background feature is a must have.

I just kept adding things until I noticed a difference... well, I haven't really noticed one yet in day to day use, although I'm sure there is a negligible one.

I'm running:

OpenSSH (I keep it disabled when not in use)
SBSettings + plugins
Winterboard
LockInfo + plugins
Backgrounder
Notifier
PDANet (I keep it disabled when not in use)

...all of which run more or less continuously some way or another in the background. And I can easily say that my phone still smokes a stock 3G.

Plus, non-background stuff in Cydia can be great:

xGPS
Quake 3
NES 3
snes4iphone
ScummVM (for old LucasArts games)
MobileTerminal
MxTube
Cyntact (awesome!)

The 3GS has plenty of horsepower for all this stuff.

PDAnet runs in the background when not in use?? If so will that slow down or just drain the battery?? or both?
