I am thinking of purchasing the ipad...some friends say yes some say no...unclear...most say an upgrade is due out in september...should I wait? anyone hear about this? apparrently current version cannot multi-task but new version will be able to?

I honestly believe you will see an update to the iPads annually, like the iPhone. I don't think September is the date for a new iPad so much as it's around the time they should drop iOS 4.

If you need this much convincing then perhaps you don't need one?

I was on the fence for ages on whether to buy one I would say definitely go out and buy it! I was gunn a wait till second gen but there's no point the iPad is great now and will be better with the ios4 update! GO AND BUY!!!!

The current version is going to get an update in November that will enable multitasking and most likely printing--this has been confirmed by Apple. The next hardware revision will *probably* be released in April or May of 2011. However, no one really knows when exactly Apple will release anything--its all speculation.

I bought my iPad already, however, you should probably wait till the 3rd or 4th gen. I hear the 3rd gen should be out soon, and has a display on the back as well, and wimax. It's also cheaper.

If I had it to do over again I would buy another first gen iPad in a heartbeat. But obviously no one can make the choice for you.

The new iOS 4 for iPad is planned in the timeframe you mention and current iPads can upgrade to it for free - giving them multitasking and who knows what other goodies.

Typically Apple only releases major hardware updates annually for a given device although its not always exactly a year and occasionally there is a minor tweak in between. I wouldn't expect a new iPad til 2Q11 but you never know.

If it does what you want buy it now. I was a skeptic but have grown very dependent on mine and just got a second one for a family member.

My advice to you is just to wait for the 2G iPad. It's only a matter of time until Apple updates the iPad, most likely this January which isnt that far away at all. My guess is that it will get a 7" model starting at $399-$429 for 16GB. And new features will be a front FaceTime cam, higher resolution screen, 512MB memory, faster 1.2-1.5GHz processor, better graphics, gyroscope, and a slight chance of a rear camera on the back.

Yes, some common sense.

Apple usl. has yearly hardware updates.

They still are rolling out iPad ver. 1. They are still selling well, with limited stock. They still are to release iOS4 for the iPad.

There is no reason to release iPad 2 this year.

You could wait till Ver 2 comes out. If you miss it on launch, and end up waiting a couple of months people will be rattling the chains warning of impending ver. 3 release.--happens every year with the iPhone.

If you have a use for it now. Decide on your refresh rate. I'm likely going to alternate years buying the iPad or the iPhone. (though this is largely 'casue I was going to get a white phone, and after a couple of months with my iPad, well my old 3G phone is adequate.)

Search is your best friend.

I hate to put my conspiracy hat on but I feel a troll in our midsts. Just fishing.... I could be wrong though.

"Your" guess?
After reading hundreds of articles on the interwebs :p

+1, even if you buy today the update is free. There WILL NOT be an update in 2010.

ok im answering a question that i asked a while back HERE IS THE ANSWER
it IS personal preference when it comes down to it but my suggestion is this
if you HAVE the cash buy it now but if you dont then dont make such a huge sacrifice (so you dont live off of bread and water for the a month or two)/also DO YOU NEED A CAMERA AND WHATEVER ELSE THESE RUMORS ARE SAYING (note* you still get the awesome iOS4 for iPad ANYWAY) and do you need AT THE MOMENT? (e.g. work, school), another:CAN YOU WAIT TILL APRIL?
Ask yourself those questions BUT DONT BASE THEM OFF OF DESIRE AND WANT BASE THEM ON PRACTICALITY
