right now I'm using wifi from a pci card as the onboard card was disabled or dead when I got the machine. I activated the Bluetooth card that was disabled and the previous owner was using a USB Bluetooth doggle. I removed it to free up the USB slot.

My wifi has a bt4 module on it but requires USB power and no internal USB ports available to my best understanding.

I have all 4 pci slots full with gpu, usb3.0, wifi/bt4 and sata card running 2 wd blue 1 tab in a raid 1 setup that is the boot drive.

I wish to add a USB-c card to get the added functionality but there are no open pci slots

Options are remove the usb3 or the wi/fo card.

Since I'm using this for my flight simulation and photography machine I really need all the USB ports that I can get better straight connection than daisy chaining the USB hubs so that leaves the wifi card.

I know the onboard boards can be replaced but I'm no expert on them. My wi-fi card is a top line card and offers all the new specs and speeds along with the bt4 module, I have the adapter cable to run to an external usb2 port on the back of the machine.

I'm thinking if I can get an onboard high speed wifi and a bt4 onboard card I'll get them and go that route and if possible I'll run the wifi antenna lead to an external antenna I have to boost performance.

A) do they make a wifi onboard card that uses the newer speeds and specs? a)with an external antenna setup?

B) do the make a Bluetooth 4.0 onboard card?

C) they must fit the motherboard in my cMP 5,1 from late 2012 iirc and be reliable and function as well as the ones on my pci card. Can you link me to the items for sell from a reputable dealer or at least the part numbers to look for and buy.

There's a system equivalent to mine in all degrees except it has a faster CPU and a better gpu and a added SuperDrive. Mine will have an blurry drive soon and a better gpu. Both are sitting next to the busy cMP.

Just go to macvidcards.com and get their wifi/Bluetooth board. Follow their instructions and your good to go. I did thus several years ago trying to keep my 5,1 current. It's easy to install. Just go slow and follow the video.

There are plenty OOTB solution out there now. IMO, no need to go for the best one, they usually not that much faster in real world.

I get my card from a China only store, I get the middle config card (2 Wifi + 1 bt antenna solution. I also purchase some antenna cable extension and external antenna. Everything together is about $40 including shipping.

TBH, I don't really need it. I use cable network. But the Wifi allow me to use Airdrop etc.

I use the cable extension and connect the card to all the external antenna. Put the BT antenna somewhere near the mouse, and the 2 wifi antenna at some good wifi reception location. So that now I don't need to worry about the interference from USB 3.0, or the metal case degrade the wifi signal etc.
