Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2, P1 Gen 2, P53, Aero OLED 15 or ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo, Concept D5/D7?

Hi, anybody considering these laptops? Why OLED touch configurations of the Thinkpads are not available? Lenovo quietly postponed release of 4K OLED model of P53 to Fall. Not sure if ASUS also postpone of Zenbook Pro Duo due to OLED screen. Is there an issue with supply of OLED components?

Do you think thicker P53 with more powerful components such as RTX GPU will be quieter? Will Zenbook Pro Duo have shorter battery life due to dual screens?

As some of you know, I have tried a few Lenovo laptops but all noisy especially when plugged in the outlet. I met somebody with T480. Even that computer has noisy fans. Not sure if Lenovo is bad at fan profile. Looks like I need to find a laptop with less non-intrusive fan profile. I heard that Gigabyte gives users more control of fan profile via software.

RTX GPUs will not produce a quieter laptop? Modern high end multi core components require significant cooling, you will not have a quiet laptop. We've been down this road before. You get tempted for something, ask a bunch of questions, many of us kindly recommend you not buy laptop x, you go and buy the laptop, or re-buy it, only to return it complaining about the noise, heat or something. I'm not trying to sound harsh but this does feel like a twisted version of the movie GroundHog day. Obviously its your money and your decision but its clear most octo-core, nvidia based laptops will have fans that will annoy you

I recommend that you wait until 2020 and apple will roll out their scissors based keyboard on their MBP. It seems only the MBP with its power profile will be quiet enough for you.

Do you mean 16" MBP with new keyboard won7t be out in the Fall?

I have wasted half the summer already. With the delay of 4K models of the above computers and possible release of MBP with new keyboard in Fall or 2020, it means I will not get any work done in the summer. I think somebody here mentioned that it is possible to have rtx laptops silent when doing basic productivity work or playing videos, it is just that they are noisy when playing games. I don't play games. I just need the nvidia gpu for occasional cuda programming and matlab sumulations. Somebody also suggested passive cooling of Acer Cincept D but even Acer has no idea when they will be available in Canada.

I don't need extremely high performance laptop as I have a powerful workstation at home. I do prefer light and silent laptop that has 14-15" 4K screen with 6+ hours battery life. Ideally with Nvidia GPU for "occasional" CUDA programming. I don't care about thinness. Something like our pre-2015 MBP 15" is reasonable. Don't know why manufacturers always try to make thinness laptops these days. Is it for marketing? I would prefer them to make lightest laptops.

In the past 30+ years, I usually purchase laptops with the latest components. Looks like these days this is not a good rule because those thin chassis imposed by manufacturers made laptops these days noisy and thermal throttle.

One of the issues I have with MBP of the past few years is that users cannot upgrade the components by themselves and SSD upgrade at purchase is very expensive. If I want 1TB for Mac OS, 1TB for Windows and 1TB for Linux, I will need a 3TB SSD in a MBP. That is very expensive. I think one article in MR mentioned that it is even more difficult for user to upgrade in a just released new MBP. Another issue is that even the up-coming scissors based keyboard is fine, I still cannot install Linux due to the T2 chip.

What so special about Apple's fan profile? Any data on how their fan profile is like? Can't we apply the same or very similar profile on Windows laptops? From youtube videos, user seems to be able to use a GUI to modify the fan curve of Gigabyte Aero OLED 15 in great details.

Why do you need 3 TB of storage when you said this already:

I don't know, but correct me if I'm wrong, you've tried and have been unable to configure a laptop to be running quiet. Also consider that Apple tends to user under powered GPUs and most performance laptops used GPUs that are powerful and cause more heat.

Why not just buy a passively cooled laptop, you seem to be all over the place stating you don't need a performance machine, but then want 3TB of storage and are looking at the RTX 2xxx series GPUs which are top of the line. As @keysofanxiety posted - you have a choice, you can pick a thin/light cool/silent laptop or you can pick a high performance one, not both. I think the majority of people here have said the same thing over and over and over, but for what ever reason you not accepting that fact.

I will say that Apple has struck a good balance of power, sound and coolness but It may not be dead silent, and the fans will no doubt spin up, but that's an assumption on my part, I don't own a MBP If you're unwilling to accept the T2 chip, or the keyboard or the closed nature then your options are limited. I can gaurentee, if you buy any of the laptops you listed in the first post, you'll end up returning it.

Please wait for the next redesign on the 15" MacBook Pros. It is the only one with the real balance of performance and quietness you are looking for.
