I made a post a few days ago about going iPad only, with my Mac mini for heavy duty tasks. At work however it quickly fell apart and now I find myself looking for another MacBook... except... I did have a lot of hassle with my last one despite it being a real weapon. And at the minute, the MacBook is a bit dated, the Air lacks a lot for the price, the 2017 13” is also no longer as much a gem due to age and the TB 2018 models are going back to where I was with the issues I had at the start of the year. The portability of the iPad is great, but after another thread I made about a Surface and users experiences (as well as the very real OTHER compromises a tablet brings despite its benefits) I’m deciding to go with a ThinkPad.

The smallest, light model I can find that doesn't compromise on quality or performance. The ThinkPad X280.

If you go on the UK Lenovo site I’m contemplating the highest quick-ship model. The i7, 512GB, HD screen one.

This was previously way too small, and the 13” MBP was getting too small as well at work and home. But I since have a monitor at work and home, so I can plug the ThinkPad in there (no adapter needed) for comfortable computing.

Another thing I didn’t like with the expensive MBP was the ‘all my eggs in one basket’ thing. They’re all going to be in the X280, but it’s marketed as tough, reliable and user replaceable parts from the Lenovo store itself. If Apple did this it’d be a different story but if anything they’re getting worse about that. And the quality of my Apple Store repairs last year really made me feel a fool - hairs on it, and loose bottom case - that was after a 140 mile trip and then again to pick it up a week later... hence why despite its merits I’m not considering one again.

It’s also a bad time to buy a MacBook, with WWDC around the corner. I’m off this week for a final exam at university so nows my chance to sell my Apple gear and order the ThinkPad so it comes before I head back to work in 2 weeks time.

What do you guys think about this? I had a ThinkPad E470 before and didn’t like it, but that was comparing a £400 Windows PC to a £1,250 Mac which I suppose wasn’t fair and wasn’t expected to be a fair alternative. People told me the E series wasn’t a ‘real thinkpad’ - is the X280? I hear them mentioned a hell of a lot.

I’ll be selling my 6-core Mac Mini, iPad Air 3, Logitech smart folio 10.5, Apple Pencil and iPhone XR. I work out that i’ll Get about £2,200.

£1,400 on that ThinkPad, leaving up to £800 for a new phone. I’m thinking ANdroid with as little Google on it as possible to go all in on the Windows ecosystem. The integration in latest builds of W10 with Android is going to deliver that ‘integrated’ experience I thought only possible on the Mac with SMS and calls.

I was thinking one of the Moto phones from Lenovo, but which one? ANd saving a few hundred £ in the process.

Well I’m surprised I got no replies. But here’s an update anyway...

I decided to list my iDevices:

Apple Pencil £50 (sold)
Logitech Case £80
Mac mini 6core w/ AppleCare £999
iPad Air 3 64GB WiFi £380

But looking on gumtree I found two ThinkPads in my area. One was £600, and it so happened to be an X280 from last September.

It’s an i5 with vPro, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1080p screen and for some reason Windows 10 Enterprise.

I’m moving my stuff from iCloud and my email, contacts and calendar to outlook. Only thing left is my 12,000 photo library downloading from iCloud on about four devices!

The deal was just too good to miss. The serial still brings up about 800 days of warranty from Lenovo remaining too.

Awesome setup. I've always liked the 12" Thinkpads - dating all the way back to the X60.

Just curious why you picked the 12" over the 13" models? I don't think the X280 is all that much smaller than the 13" Thinkpad Ultrabooks. I've always hoped for a edge-to-edge, bezel-free screen in the 12" form factor while keeping a full-size, signature Thinkpad keyboard.

Not for nothing, but there's iCloud for windows. I've loaded that onto my thinkpad, at least for the contacts. My phone is the primary need for contacts and the computer is secondary, so keeping my contacts in iOS is a big plus. I've migrated most everything else over to onedrive and I'll eventually cancel the icloud storage that I'm paying 99 cents for

I'm using 1Password for the same reason. If I fire up Safari/Vivaldi/Firefox/anything on any other platform, all my passwords are already there. Of course, there are alternatives to 1pass, but I don't even plan on trying them out, since 1pass works like a charm for me.

I've moved away from 1Password, for login passwords, simplay because I can use chrome anyware and it simply works. 1Password doesn't auto plug in my passwords on my iPhone and iPad (and I admit that might be due to my not setting it up correctly).

Also I refuse to pay for the subscription and I've moved away from dropbox, so functionally speaking 1Password just doesn't meet my needs any longer.

I still have an old version on my laptop simply to hold my other details, like account info for my mortgage, banks, credit card stuff etc.

I think I'll just enter them into the Windows keychain tbh, keep everything as ecosystem tight and native as possible.

The bigger issue... I bought Affinity Photo & Designer for Mac last December, asked them if they'd be able to revoke my license keys and issue me with Windows ones but they said they can't. Kinda sucks. Any other good software that I can do most of that stuff on for Windows?

I was going to replace iMovie's use with Corel Video Studio Pro, anybody like / dislike that software?

Quick question guys... how does the X280 do in terms of water / dust / shock / bump resistance?
