Hi All,

So before you ask, I have spent time looking through this forum and others to find some answers... but came up empty.

Just bought my iphone yesterday and after 3.5 exciting hours of "hacking", got the phone jailbroken (woohoo!). However, I am now wondering--as a PC user-- what is the best way for me to input all the contacts from my old phone into the new one. I don't use outlook or yahoo (Thunderbird) nor do I have most of my contacts already input in Thunderbird. However, there must be some application I can type my contacts into and have it upload directly to the iphone right? Some nice version of OS X's address book for windows? Otherwise I'm gonna have to go buy an imac!!

Secondly, is there a reputable site that list the good iphone apps that I can now use with my jailbroken iphone? I've seen a few apps discussed in various posts here and searched the web but haven't found anything that seemed too exciting (mostly because I don't think I'm looking in the right place). What I am looking for is a collection similar to that hosted by Firefox re: Add-on Extension where you have a list of good quality apps that are peer reviewed.

Sorry for the length, hope that all is clear. Thanks in advance for your help!

What type of phone are you trying to get your contacts off of?
Motorola phones, for example, can use Motorola Phone Tools that will export your contacts to the Windows Address Book or Windows Contacts (Vista).

As for apps, when you ran the Jailbreak process, you should have gotten a lovely new icon call Installer added to the main screen.
Click it, wait for it to refresh the resources list and then click on the Install button at the bottom. Some really great applications can be selected and installed via this tool.

Hi, and welcome to the iPhone community!

First of all, when you were jailbreaking yesterday, at the last part where you have to update back to 1.1.2, did you just hold "shift" and click update to get the 1.1.2 file as opposed to the 1.1.3 file? This is a problem many people are asking about and I honestly can't give a "good" answer...

Second of all, head over to AppleiPhoneSchool.com for a GREAT site that details all of the apps now available. I am also going to be adding app pages to the site in my signature.

Also, if your old phone supports bluetooth, that is how I transfered all of my contacts to my comp and just used the address book to transfer them to my iPhone.

(but go buy an iMac anyway :))

I was actually using a samsung phone but the screen cracked and then went black (hence my reason for buying the iphone) and thus it is totally unhelpful. In the interim I had my sim card in an old nokia (6200?) but for whatever reason, the nokia would not pull any of my contacts from the sim card but rather simply displayed the contacts that were saved to the phone's memory. I've searched everywhere on the phone for an option to "read from sim" but have had no luck (its a really old phone so maybe its not possible).

Thus, I now have my sim card in the iphone with all my contacts stranded on it! I was thinking about going into the AT&T store and seeing if they could print out a list of the contacts from my sim card. Is there no add on application for windows itunes that would allow me to type up contact info and then sync it to the iphone?

I will check out the installer for apps, thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the welcome! With regard to jailbreaking, you can see my posts in another thread but basically, yes, when it came time to restore to 1.1.2, I just held down shift, clicked update, and then selected the 1.1.2 restore file that I had downloaded from modmyiphone. There is another twist however, and that is after you have installed 1.1.2 on the iphone, you need to press eject in itunes (apparently almost immediatly) and then quit itunes. I went through the process once and just removed the iphone from the cradle and had to start over.

Thanks very much for the web site suggestion. I'll def. check it out!

Can't help ya with the SIM issue, but you can use the Windows Address Book (XP) or Windows Contacts (Vista) to create your phone book.
iTunes can sync either one of those with your iPhone.
No need to use 3rd party software.

Check out InstallerApps.com for a list of the 3rd party applications. . .and which ones are the good ones
