hello, i am having problems with installing third party apps with the usual method of dragging the icon (after i open the .dmg file) to the applications folder. instead of showing a regular app icon in the applications folder, there is now a shortcut icon and every time i open the app, it goes through the installation process again. it is as if catalina refuses to properly install the app, instead just linking to the .dmg file. does anybody know how to solve this?

i have already changed permissions in the security & privacy tab in system preferences to allow apps downloaded from anywhere. the apps that i have tried installing so far are blender and vlc media player and the same thing happens with both.

Try holding the option key down when dragging the application to the folder. This should not be necessary, but you may either be holding a different key down or your computer is not working exactly properly. This has nothing to do with any security settings in Catalina, however.
