So I just swapped my 2006 MP for a new "2012" while my wife was running errands. I wonder if she will catch on... Do you think she will notice that one of the FW400 ports on the front panel is now a FW800 port? Christ, even I didn't notice, and I now have to go out and buy a FW 400->FW800 adapter to hook up my trusty old iSight camera :(

Thank God Apple stuck with the old case! AFAIAC, it's the most gorgeous thing I've laid my eyes on (besides my wife, of course :))

That's friggin' brilliant.

Apple should list this as a "pro" feature, especially if they keep the same case for the 2013 units.

this may be the only thing the new mac pro has going for it... stealth upgrade so long as your wife doesn't see the credit card bill.

As long as it isn't in the kitchen she shouldn't notice.:p

If she doesn't look at the bills or you payed with cash and she doesn't know much about computers I doubt she would ever notice. The only difference would be that the computer seems faster.

Well, given your well-publicized adventure of sticking it to Apple by buying an outdated machine, I bet if she went online she'd find out. Who pays the bills? Who cares? Tell your wife, it's a marriage ... seems rather important to be honest with your wife but what do I know?

Funny !

I went through the same swap about a month ago. For a while I had both my 2,1 and 5,1 in my office. My wife came in, looked at both machines puzzled and said, "So which one is the new one?". HA......:D

I actually love the case and am glad they didn't change it. :)

So Akadmon, can you feel the jump from your MP 1,1 to 5,1(6,1)?

Happy with the improvement.. I'm considering the same path, but usually I buy when there is a 4-7x performance jump.. this is about a 2.7x..

Just curious of your impressions, and satisfaction with the upgrade.

No worries - I put it on a new credit card and opted for paperless statements :)

Anyway, this is just a game - I will tell her at some point. In fact, I told her last week (right before pulling the trigger) that I'm seriously thinking of buying a new computer (stop it, Jessica!), but then the subject did not come up for a few days. On Tuesday she asked me about it, and I told her, for the heck of it, that I decided to stick with my old one.

I'm too busy enjoying my newly purchased outdated machine to bother with your ad hominem. Nonetheless, since you feel compelled to keep giving me unsolicited advice, I'll reciprocate just this one time: stay away from my marriage and keep out of my wallet.

I love my Mac Pro. Amazing machine. I'm still amazed each time I use it. Congrats on the purchase!

Yeah, the 6-core, especially after the price drop, is a sweet little machine. BTW, nice setup you have with the two 27" ACDs. I'm rocking a 30" ACD and a 24" Dell, so we're even in terms of total real estate :) At some point (later this year), I'm thinking of getting another 30" display (probably a Dell) and moving the 24" to my office at work, where I'm stuck with a 4 year old Dell laptop and a 19" display. If I can't sell my tricked out 1,1 (Radeon 4870, 12 GB RAM, 6Gb eSATA) for at least $900, I'm gonna push hard to have my employer let me use it at work.

man that work to home technological transition sounds brutal! congrats on the new mac!

It seems significant others who don't rely on Macs seldom understand, that's quite an upgrade though!

The only thing I'll say is, if it comes up at some point down the road, she might give you holy hell for just not telling her about it at the time, good luck though!

I thought it was a joke in the sense of it being a test, like you wanted to see how long it would take for her to figure out that you replaced the computer. Is that incorrect?

Correct. I'm just trying to get back mat her, because she has the habit of noticing every little thing. I can't wait to get get back at her in a couple of week with "did you notice I have a new computer?" :)

That's funny, and that's how I initially interpreted it.

I have switched silently, G5 2GHz, G5 2.7 GHz, G5 quad, MacPro 2008. Only one of my kids oncevnoticed two CD slots instead of one in the previous mac, my wife smiled, she knows exactly, from my behavior and the happy face, when I buy a new "toy"!
