Like Steve Jobs did with the floppy disk, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is trying to kill off the DVD by forcing studios/networks to offer their content via digital stream. I have to believe that any success on this front will spill over to the iTunes rental space as well.

I think you are trying too hard to make the Netflix price increase some noble quest. It's not.

Bottom line, this is about making more money because they have very little competition and think they can get by with it.

Let's hope the market proves them wrong. If everyone canceled their Netflix accounts when the prices go up, it wouldn't take long for the dog to start wagging its tail again, instead of the other way around.

I don't know much about netflix as I'm in Europe, and we cant get it here. But didn't they actually decrease the price if you choose one medium? Do people who rent DVDs tend to also rent movies online, and vice versa? Can't imagine it really...

For people who have the one-DVD-at-a-time + streaming, the cost is going from $10 to $16 per month. A 60% increase.

You can buy the two services individually for $8 each. The streaming is nice, but has a very lackluster selection to be worthwhile for me at $8. I have found the current $10 level to be excellent for what I use it for, but reject $16 on principle.

They just raised prices last November and seem to be doing well at that price. If this change is all about some kind of social engineering, then too bad. Streaming has a long ways to go to replace DVD's. Internet service is not universal yet and I like having my own copies that can't be yanked remotely, if they find out they "goofed" and didn't have authorization to stream certain content.
