I've got my 2017 iPhone SE for more than one week now and I restored it to the latest backup of my iPhone 6 the first day SE arrived. Here is how my yearly view looks like in the photos app:

I understand it could take one or two days to regenerate previews for photos on a new iPhone. But this is absolutely unacceptable after more than one week. Come on apple, restore from a backup is not something cutting edge tech is involved. I am sure that I am gonna stop boasting to people around about reliability of apple operating system any longer even though I remain as an apple fan.

Resorting from backup creates a huge possibility for corruption to occur. You are talking about merging files from a device that is over 2 years old. The OS is different, the hardware is different. Each iOS device has its own version of iOS for the hardware it contains. If these are camera roll photos you can sync them to your computer and reupload via iTunes. If they are iTunes sync photos, remove them and resync them. You could also try resetting all settings.

You might be correct. But it's likely there is only one in 100 customers who would have created this post and get a reply like yours to read through all these excuses you found for apple. And if I am reading you right, "Restoring from backup creates a huge possibility for corruption to occur.", then a huge amount of iphone users who upgrade their phone from 2 years ago would undergo one or another kind of corruption. This sounds horrible for apple.

Back to your suggestion. I did the backup with the latest iTunes on a mac with latest macOS. And more than 90% of my photos are camera roll ones. Btw, 100% photos, being either created in camera roll or synced from iTunes, are backed up by iTunes if I remembered it correctly. I think doing a resetting has only 1 percent of chance to solve the problem and it's not worth the time having to set every setting back to their previous value.

I did not make a single excuse. I merely explained to you why issues can arise. It has nothing to do with Apple being incompetent after 10 years of iOS. This can happen on any single Operating System in the world. Merging files always leads to a higher percentage of corruption. That is how software works.

To my suggestion, you have absolutely no way of knowing that there is only a 1% chance it will fix the issue. If corruption is at play, resetting all settings (not erasing all content and settings) could absolutely fix your issue. Something is clearly corrupt. You cannot deny that. If you don't want to take the time to attempt to fix it, then you have no right to complain. If you take the time to fix it and there is still an issue, then you have merit to be upset.

As to photos being synced through iTunes. If you sync them from your computer, no they are not part of the backup because the hard copy of the photos is already on the computer. iTunes or iCloud merely backs up what is on the phone itself, such as app data, music data, camera roll and so on. It does not backup music, it does not backup the app itself and it does not backup photos that you sync manually.

Why not try restoring again? Maybe something went wrong. Do you still have the iPhone 6 to back up again? And yeah, give Reset All Settings a try first.

Sometimes (and with iOS 9 especially) I had to restore multiple times to get it to work due to various errors.

I can see you are using a Chinese ISP plus wifi network. Given the nature of Chinese intranet, if your photo is stored in iCloud, restoring those photos could take forever. Maybe you could tell us where your photo is originally stored.

I do not use icloud photo library simply because I don't have enough icloud storage for photos. Actually, all my photos have already been restored as I can view any of those blacked out ones in its full view.

I will try "Reset All Settings" if I have time on weekend.

I don't know if my practice is recommended that I don't transfer purchases to iTunes. Whenever after I restore using iTunes and unplug from mac third party apps will have to be redownloaded from apple's server. So it would take at least 2 or 3 hours to completely do a restore.

Reimporting all your photos should solve the problems instantly (export to PC/mac, delete from device, import again). However, that's simply a workaround, and further issues may occur. I will highly recommend a complete factory reset and starting as a new device if you are able to do that.
