So I got in on the free Crossover offer, decided to play DoD:S, I haven't touched it (or any other game) in over a year, been really busy, downloaded crossover games and went on to download steam and DoD:S.

It doesn't work, well to be more fair, it results in a large white rectangle on my screen with the steam program overlaid. Can't force quit, can't do anything, mouse moves and that's it. Five minutes later it crashes and I'm able to control my computer again.

What gives? A while back I tried regular Crossover on a trial and had the same problem, it just bar-none doesn't work. And this is across two different computers. Do I need some magic pixie dust? A few blood sacrifices?

I've tried all the recommended tips and tricks. Crossover has been more or less a total disappointment for me here, I guess that its way of keeping me productive.

What do you expect? Do you realize the futility of trying to make a Windows clone?

For what it's worth, DoD worked fine on my imac with Crossover when they did the free weekend a few months ago, so there is (or was, I guess something could have broken since then...) at least some support for it. Tried their forums? There's normally helpful people around.

lol dod:s works fine out of the box on my mbp. are you sure your not tryign to dthis on a macbook? if so the case of fail is on your shoulders.

No, one's a MBP the other is a Hacki (didn't really expect it to work here) with a 2600XT.

I am not sure about this, maybe someone can correct me. But don't you have to have the developer stuff installed, so that you will have X11. Do you have the developer stuff installed? Mine always overlays with a white rectangle for 20 or 30 seconds when I first launch it, but then it loads up eventually.:apple:

Crossover, regardless of what codeweavers says, is a Mac native port of Wine. The Linux version of Crossover is worthless, mainstream Wine is better in every way. Mainstream Wine exists for Mac OS X, and would be better if Apple would fix the bug in X11 that's preventing it from talking to OpenGL(Crossover severs the X11 dependance, making it workable for games on Mac).

The problem is that Codeweavers seems to think of "optimization" as "picking a very short list of things to support, and breaking compatibility with every other app." They list things like Team Fortress 2, and WoW, and that list is pretty much all inclusive. Each version of Crossover is built on a specific version of Wine(you can see the wine version somewhere in the menus), and you will find that apps reported to run perfectly or with minor tweaks on the corresponding version of Wine don't work at all on Crossover, regardless of what you do. The apps they do choose to support often run better on mainline Wine. The only reason they can still sell this crap is because Apple can't seem to be bothered to fix X11, nor does anyone in the OSS community want to try porting mainstream Wine to Aqua, either of which would solve the problem right away.

The problem isn't the idea of simulating a Windows environment with open source cleanroom reverse engineering, it's that this company is brain damaged, and happens to be the only easy way to get OpenGL enabled Wine on the Mac platform.

Don't forget that Apple has probably the worst support for drivers on the planet. They still havent answered 6 month old bug reports on GLSL shaders (that keep us from playing TF2 well). Their support of X-11 is awful as you said. They are hostile towards it almost.

Apple shoots itself in the foot. For the amount of money they make and the fact they control the hardware they should have the best drivers on the planet. It's sad when NVidias linux drivers are better.

Also Crossover is (in the FAR future) going to switch over to their own x-windows system since x-11 is pretty crappy. They said this on the beta testers forum - but they didnt give a date.
