So I had an iPhone 6S plus. Still going strong and fits my needs. However I always like smaller phone. I didn’t go with the regular 6S due to the inferior camera, batter, and the 720p screen. I have had the iPhone X for a week and so far I like it a lot. It fixes all the flaws of the regular 6S. Paying $1250 for it is a bit tough as I got the 6S plus 128gb used last year for $500. Below are how I justify if it’s worth it to upgrade:

New design/ smaller/ easier to hold: $75
Full screen/ brighter sharper screen: $50
Better battery: $50
Wireless charging/ faster with usb C: $35
More powerful: $75
Better rear and front cameras: $75
Waterproof: $25
Bigger storage (256vs 128): $50
Brand new+ warranty: $100
Louder stereo speakers: $25

Total: $560

Note the prices above are how I see the improvements are relatively better than my iPhone 6S plus. For ex, I’m totally fine with 128Gb on the 6s plus so I see it’s only worth $50 more to upgrade to 256gb.

My 6S plus 128Gb is probably worth $350 now. I paid $1250 for the X so that leaves $340 unallocated. I guess this could be allocated to “joy of owning the newest Apple product”? Lol

On the serious side tho, FaceID is inferior to touchID to my opinion...

Funny thing is most people who own iPhone X says Face ID is superior and they will never go back to the outdated Touch ID.
Yes, agreed. Face ID might seem slower, but it is more convenient, especially with hiding notifications on the lock screen.

Yeah this is one neat feature of FaceID that I like. However, it can’t compensate for other inconvenience likes using it at an angle, farther distance or landscape detection

That's an interesting way to quantify it. I definitely have different allocations than you, but nevertheless, the iPhone needs no justification if you have the funds. Full screen, better battery, camera, alone are worth the price. Since I came from the 7, waterproofing was already there and doesn't count. The rest is gravy. I'm indifferent to FaceID, it has it's advantages and disadvantages. BUT we all use these differently, so different things are weighted differently for each person.

This is how I justify paying $1250 for the iPhone X
A POX on justifying!

I buy what I want to get and it costs what it costs. If I have it, I get it. If I don't, I wait until I do.

Why does everyone have to justify getting something they want? If we all did that, no one would ever get what they want.

Buy what you want. Who the hell cares about justifying it!

Speaking only for myself, I think mentioning that sort of soothes the mild buyer's remorse (I know that's been my head canon anyway.) I agree with your post.

Buyer's remorse is not something I am too familiar with. Usually, I know what I want and what I don't want. Of course I always try to get it for the cheapest price I can, but if I have the money I will get it and then not worry about how much I paid.

But I'm also not tossing my money around either. When it comes to phones we upgrade every 2.5 to 3.5 years so I've usually done my research by the time I buy and in that span of time I've come up with the money. Hence, there is rarely buyer's remorse on my part.

People get paralyzed by decision making. They want something but they feel they have to justify the price. All I care about is whether I want it or not.

I'm more than willing to wait too. I've waited years, sometimes decades for the things I've wanted. But I got them in the end.

I've never felt the need to justify any of my purchases, much less something as personal as an iPhone
And if I have to go to such lengths to rationalize a purchase like this to myself, well, then I probably don't need it anyway
I guess that's why I've not bought an Apple Watch :)

That's nice and all, but there's no way i'm ever spending 1k+ on a cell phone regardless of how nice it is. Thats just insane to me. Recently upgraded from a 16 GB iPhone 6. I just bought a used iPhone 7 Plus 256gb w/ a new case a few weeks back on ebay for $550.00. Not a single scratch on it. For a 1 year old phone, that is a STEAL. They dont even sell the 7 plus with 256 GB anymore. Overstock on some websites have it going for $800-$900. I'd rather let someone else who feels the need to upgrade their phone every year, buy it full price day 1, then sell it to me a year later with a 20-40% haircut. I did the same with my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro 512 GB. Got it for $820 two years after its release. As long as you dont care about being the "first one to unbox", its actually a pretty decent strategy.

This is how I justify paying over $1,000 for a phone:

Ability to make and receive calls - $20
Ability to send and receive instant messages -$30
Ability to connect to the internet - $10
The look on other people's faces when I tell them I paid over $1,000 for a phone - priceless!

I got an 7 Plus 256gb for my sister for $525 from Craigslist. Also I got my 6S plus for $500 last year. Typically an iPhone loses 50% of their price after a year. I still am quite undecided if I want to keep the X despite all the justification that I made. Next year buy a used iPhone X for around $600 is sure a good deal. Still have 3 more weeks left until the return period closes...

I just bought the X an hour ago. Not happy about the price, but coming from a 6+ I love it already.

I use this device all day everyday, its my main photo taker, it connects me to the world. I typically upgrade 2/3 years so this will last me a while.

I skipped the 7+ upgrade that I would have done, but the design remained the same so I passed, so I saved some money that way.

Plus, I only have a MacBook to compliment it. No iPad, no iMac, no Apple watch either (again, saved money being minimalistic).

The notch doesn't bother me one bit. Great Xmas gift to myself (see what I did there?).

It really is a good deal! The X is a nice phone, I've seen it in person. Im sure the features are great as well. Another problem for me is iOS just seems to be stagnant. Its like sure the X is awesome, but after a few weeks using the phone on the same old iOS would probably make me have buyer's remorse. IMO apple needs to put a bit more focus into innovation towards iOS.

Congrats OP! The X is a great device, but not for me..it’s going back for a 8+ that’ll better suit my use case.

I will reconsider when (if) Apple decides to release an X-L version of it, with an optional touch ID.

So happy I just got a used 7 for $125 net after selling my 6. X was overpriced and I was not comfortable carrying it around. impulse buy I guess, Face ID was somewhat frustrating.
I believe iPhone XI will be cheaper, thinner, lighter, improved battery and Face ID will work better.

Right, an improved new model is always cheaper. o_O

It's almost as if people have different opinions...

I have the X and FaceID is far less accurate. But the other features of the phone make up for it.

It sounds almost like you are trying to justify it to yourself and that makes it look like you are suppressing the buyer's remorse. You still have a few days to take it back and get a refund. There's no reason to spend a months wages on a telephone.

On The contrary, I don't believe that's what the OP is saying at all. I think they are just breaking down specifically how they justify the cost. So I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion thats a months wages not knowingly what they generate for income in the first place.

What I said previously. As to your questions about the OP’s income, it’s a question for them, not me.
