I think I’m going crazy.

There’s this square that keeps showing up in my Menu Bar. It shows up, stays for a couple of seconds, and then disappears.

Clicking on it doesn’t open any menus. I even went as far as to put VoiceOver on speed dial as an accessibility shortcut in case it might be able to read out the description of the Menu Bar item for me. Even with that, I got nothing.

Does anybody have an idea on what it is? Or has anybody had experience with this same type of problem? Thanks.

sudo opensnoop in terminal then when it happens cancel command and look for hints from the bottom, if the process accesses some files it should appear here

You're the best.

I never knew about this, but sudo opensnoop does continuously refresh the terminal display every time a file or folder is opened, regardless if it was user or a system process that opened the file.

If you're on a modern Mac, you'll need to disable SIP for this command to work. Always make sure to re-enable SIP once you've finished.

Once the square appeared again, I just simply used the Control + C shortcut to stop the process, and then I analyzed the last several results to attempt to reveal which process caused the square.

Edit: I'm near certain it has something to do with Firefox, version 97.0. No wonder I never see the square when I'm at home, I only use Firefox for school.
