In Safari, I have been seeing the following message lately:

"✖️ This webpage is using significant memory ..."

I have a MacBook Pro M1, 16GB, 1TB ... You know the story. The point is that I know I should not be experiencing these issues. So why am I? I only have 8 tabs open and none are too intensive IMO. Of the tabs, 2 are Gmail.

Anyway, is this something on my end? Something that I am doing?

PS ... My apologies if this is the wrong forum. I didn't know where to place it.

It is just Safari being Safari. No way to stop it, just ignore it and move on....

As you know, Apple insists on power efficiency over everything else, so this is the result of fulfilling that objective.

Geez, it is annoying. I don't remember it happening to me until the last couple of months. What did they change?

Big Sur might be better if you can go back?

I have a 2019 iMac 27 i9. was on Monterey. fully updated.

Got that all the time along with other memory leaks.

I ended up going all the way back to Mojave.

My Mac is fast again. Boots up fast. Applications launch fast again. I'm happy.

Not the latest greatest. but rock solid.

I've got a 2022 MacBook Pro M1. My wife does too. Why am I getting the message, and she isn't?

Depends on what you’re doing. I get the issue when watching Twitch using Safari so if one of those tabs you have is doing some kind of media that may be an issue.

I don't think it's Safari, I think it's Farcebook. For the last couple months I've been seeing it too, but only when I'm on Bezosebub's website; and I can feel my 16" M1 MBP get warm on my legs (still haven't heard the fan). Don't know if its all the political ads, or what.
I do get one good feelie about all this, though: when I see a political ad, I hit "Hide all ads from this Schmuck", or whatever the message is, and then when I get the follow-on question "Why do you want to hide this ad?", I can gleefully hit "Already Purchased"!
It's a small thing, I know, but it makes me happy for a few minutes. :)

I have the same mode. If I see anything like that I just close the app with Command+Q and then reopen it. That solves the issue.

It isn't a problem with your memory or Safari, it's just you are on a site which is using a lot of your memory and it's telling you so you can take action if you want.
It doesn't depend on how much memory you have- I'm pretty sure it doesn't know-and it isn't that you are running out.
Disney site always give this in my experience.

Maybe you started visiting webpages that use a lot of memory?

I’ve seen this forum take up 1GB per tab due to ads.

I get this a lot on Safari 11.x on High Sierra. I think it's just Apple being honest about how much of a CPU and memory hog Safari is.
You must not run Chrome.

If you go into activity monitor, you can see how much ram each site is hogging, rather than the app hogging memory.

"Of the tabs, 2 are Gmail."

There's your problem. The Gmail website uses a shocking and outrageous amount of RAM just being open. One Safari tab regularly uses 3-4GB on my 14" M1 MBP. Remove the Gmail tabs and you'll be fine.
