My Garmin is now 7 years old, and while they do update it, the thing is sluggish and has poor resolution. I don't see the value in a $200 upgrade, and since the trend is toward using smartphones for GPS, I was wondering what are the car GPS apps with considering. Your input is welcomed. TIA.

Are you asking to track your endevours, or to get you someplace? If the later, by all means, jump to Maps, Waze or google. All are far more accurate with live updates including traffic.
Well, if you don't like that option, Navigon is another. I have used it in the past and it wasn't bad but I prefer Google or Waze now.
You can turn off all the stuff that shows up on the Waze map in settings...Click the magnifying glass lower right, then the gear top left, then "Display & map", then "Details on map".
I don't use Waze regularly simply because they require you to have Location Services set to "Always" despite users complaining for years. I don't need them to send me reminders. I want to use the app when I want to use it and shut it off when I'm done with it.
I use either google maps,Apple maps or,if I need to find shops,restaurants and similar,poisonmap,as it also run on my AW2. For outdoor navigation when hunting or fishing,I prefer dedicated gps devices. The phone is ok for driving or walking in populated areas and highways,but it's not very good for hiking in mountains or boating in narrow waters.
Google Maps or TomTom. Apple Maps is okay, but it usually fails to tell me the last turn or two at the end of a trip and just tells me the destination is in a general area, which is frustrating. Google Maps gives very specific instructions before an upcoming turn. For instance, Apple Maps will just say "stay right", while Google Maps will say "stay right on x street" or whatever the highway sign is. I'd rather have more information than less.
I use TomTom on long road trips where I know cell reception will cut out. You basically download the entire map of the country all at once. I haven't used other offline map services to compare it to though. Google Maps also lets you download specific areas so that you don't have to use your data.
HERE is a great app - especially if you don't want to each up your data plan. Download the maps you need before you travel and use the app offline.
