I was just wondering if any of you wifi model ipad users ever used maps? I don't know what good it would be if you don't have gps.

Yes, WiFi location services can locate you. Map services can give you travel directions. Didn't you ever use maps on a desktop?

So you've never use maps on a desktop?

Planning routes?
Having a look where strets and shops are located relaxant to other land marks?
Using street view to show people things?
Checking distances and travel times between places?
Using it to view bike routes and walks you have done?

Yeah because no map was ever useful until they had a blue dot following the route...

The wifi and skyhook do a pretty good job of filling in the start point for directions. For bookmarking locations and such it's still good.

Okay, in just haven't used it yet outside of my house so I don't know how it would work out. So I can still get the directions and what not without the wifi connection right?

You didn't ask about using it without an Internet connection. Since the Maps.app pulls the data from the Internet as it's needed and it has no way to cache data then you would not see any maps. There are apps that will download maps for offline you though.

Sorry, wasn't clear - the lack of a real GPS does not hinder the usefulness of the maps, a lack of wifi connection does. I have my phone serving a network to the iPad so I don't really think about it.

Maps with wifi connection = cool
Maps without wifi connection = poop

Yes, even on the road. Plan your route or several while connected. Then save each leg as an image. (press sleep and home button at same time). The images are then save in your pictures app. Drive the route and flip through the images as you need them.

It is not as nice as turn by turn. But I find that I rarely need directions the whole way. Driving Florida to California for instance. Get on I-10, stay on for a long time.

Tell me about it! I was going to respond to your question but remembered I have a 3G iPad not a wifi one! :D

You've got it made easy with the maps then. I realize I can use wyfi but then why do that I might as well use my google maps on my 3GS for that

The Maps on the iPad seem a lot faster and more accurate, and the iPad must be the biggest GPS on the planet but damn it looks gorgeous and so clear.

I agree with this comment.

The iPad is so fast in loading pictures in different views that is a pleasure to search any place or even navigate using the "ground camera" :) .

Has anyone tried to use the GPS car kits with the wifi iPad? Assuming you don't mind breaking the case (because the iPad is too wide to fit in the cradle) I wonder if just plugging it into the dock connector would work?

I've used it just messing around at home. But if I needed to find a location or was traveling, it'd come in handy.

I use maps all the time. I travel a lot and re-visit my favorite cities while laying in bed with the satellite view. I love when you can go to street view. It was amazing returning to Old Town Square in Prague. Also, my mom is sitting on our front porch, so I take a trip home whenever I want. Bottom line - the maps app is my favorite app. Have no us for GPS. I have a great sense of direction and can read a map.

I use maps with my wifi. As said it still locates you pretty accurately.

Ive been using the maps on my wifi only using my mifi device worked well knows where you are no problems.

I use it quite a bit for route planning, local search etc. Particularly, the street view is awesome! I don't know if its my imagination, but I also think the UI looks better than the iphone version.
