So last Thursday morning, I picked up a second-hand, 8-month old 20" iMac from a friend of mine. The iMac is something I've had my eye on for awhile, previously working on a rather substandard Dell laptop; needless to say, when the opportunity arose, I gladly took it!
Now that I've had a week to work with the OS, the Adobe CS, etc, I feel more than comfortable working with the iMac. I've used Macs at work, etc for several years, so it wasn't a question of acclimatizing to the system. However, the ease with which you can do pretty much anything is astounding. FontBook! For pete's sake, font management no longer requires opening up Microsoft Word and scrolling through the installed fonts (I know there's font management apps for Windows; couldn't be assed, knowing a mac was coming soon).
It seems like Windows does pretty much everything 80% as well as Macs do. Fundamentally, the programs are essentially the same, and it's not difficult to use Windows. It's just not as easy, not as streamlined, or not as polished. I have nothing against the PC world, and will be hanging on to the Dell for the hell of it and "just incase", but everything's just that much easier and friendlier with the Mac. Em-dashes & en-dashes! Foreign characters! Easy, simple font management right out of the box! It's a typographer's dream.
I used a Mac growing up as a kid, as my parents had them, until I got my first PC for gaming about 10 years ago. One decade later, I've returned to the fold.
