I have a 3GS on 5.1. It's fine - my 3GS runs about the same speedwise (not as good as iOS 4 but within 90%).

However, iOS 5 is somewhat buggy - double text tones going off, lockscreen slider unresponsive with texts/calls (it's rare but it's happened).

I would upgrade because of iCloud, wireless syncing, iMessage and all the new great features - definitely worth it.

May I recommend doing a fresh install? You would obviously have to reinstall all your apps/photos/music/etc but when I did that with my iPhone - it ran a lot faster than just upgrading it.

Of course, I only have 12 apps, and putting my music back was easy. But either way, it should be a great upgrade.

I've upgraded my wife's iPhone 3Gs a few days ago and never experienced any problems at all. At first I was a bit hesitant because of so many complaints I read online. The reasons why I upgraded it to IOS 5.1 so we can use iMessage, iCloud, and the wifi sync.

No, Therapy Boy, I don't encounter a single problem at my iPhone 4 after I upgraded it to iOS 5.0.1. I even has Jailbroken it and it was a success! Apart from that, iOS 5 brings do much new features that you'll fall in love with iOS 5!

Cool. My only recommendatation would have been to not use the USB3 port on my PC. Updates fail every time. :)

A buddy of mine upgraded his wife's 3GS and IIRC some of the latest features aren't supported so you don't have the full meal deal. But... You have the latest security if you don't JB and that's worth something!
