i was just wondering what some of you thought about blog sites as online portfolios. too unprofessional? limited? etc... or if any of you have any good examples of blog-esque portfolios.

I havne't really customized WordPress too much but it works, it's fast, and easily manageable.

In my personal opinion, using a blog designed as a blog as your portfolio, tends to get cluttered. If you absolutely must use a blog, be sure to make/buy/copy/steal a decent design that reflects that this is a portfolio, by highlighting your works.
Ex. the following templates. Both templates created for Wordpress, intended to be used as portfolios.
When browsing portfolios, I'll need a quick overview of what you're capable of. This is not something a regular blog design gives me.
just don't get into posting the scores of your cousin's bowling team, complaining about your city councilman and posting your vacation pictures on the blog!
if you go the blog route, just keep it focused on presenting images of your work

Good points here. If you know CSS and PHP, I'd think a blog architecture would be just fine. You can customize it to your heart's content, and it won't look like a "blog."
There are also ready-made templates that allow you take advantage of the core architecture and plug in the specifics in place of predefined variables.
I don't see why not. Just don't use a template... Nothing says I don't care about my work and I'm not creative like using someone elses work. If you're a graphic designer wouldn't be a bad idea to get some web experience anyways. You can turn a wordpress blog into your own pretty easily.
yeah, i definitely agree with the whole not using a template idea. i think i have enough experience to modify one or make my own. also, anymore examples would be great. thanks again!
If all you're going to do is set up a Blogger account or a basic install of WordPress, no don't do it. It looks cheap, unprofessional and unoriginal.
I've seen some portfolios that are run on WordPress or TypePad or whichever one I forget and you'd not be able to tell it except for the "Powered by" credit at the bottom.. In these cases, I think it's great because you get the best of both worlds: Original design & CMS.
In my case, I don't need the power of Blogging software, so I usually power my portfolio using basic PHP I write myself, which handles it dynamically just the same but saves me the time of having to skin WP.
